• Dave was hired in 1988 to resurrect a program that was winless since 1984. He suffered a heart attack prior to the 1988 season keeping him off the sidelines until the following year.
• In 1989, the Warriors won in week four at York ending a 33-game winless streak. Waterloo would win its next three games to make the playoffs for the first time since 1978.
• Dave was honoured with the Frank Tindall trophy as the CIAU Coach of the Year award in 1989.
• In 1996, Waterloo posted their best regular season of 7-1 and won their first playoff game in team history with a 26-23 over Wilfrid Laurier in the OUAA semi-final.
• Dave led the team to its first Yates Cup Championship in 1997 knocking off the Western Mustangs 30-10 in London.
• The Warrior football program produced thirty-three All-Canadians under his tutelage.
• Dave retired from Waterloo upon completion of the 1997 season with an all-time record of 42-33-1 as head coach of Warrior football and the winningest coach in CIAU football history.
• In 2007, he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame with a career Canadian University Football record of 143-78-6 (regular season record).
