Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. - The Battle of Waterloo kicked off Friday night on Warrior Field as the Warriors women's and men's soccer teams hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks under the lights.
Laurier drew first blood as their women's side took a 5-2 victory in the opener. The men were able to answer back for the black and gold, with Sam Schafer's second clean sheet of the season the highlight in a 2-0 win.
The Warrior's men's squad came into this match riding high, as the only undefeated team remaining in the OUA at 4-0. Laurier, meanwhile, sported a record of 1-2-1 and have yet to win on the road.
The Warriors were able to strike quickly as fourth-year winger James Arango (Mississauga/North Mississauga League 1) scored just nine minutes into the match. It was the Mississauga, Ont. native's first goal of the season.
Waterloo controlled play but struggled to generate scoring chances for most of the match. Laurier outshot Waterloo 9-2 in the first half, but Schafer held strong, finishing the match with eight saves.
Schafer ranks third in the OUA with 24 saves through five matches. The conference leader stood across the field from him on Friday, but Laurier's David Carano added just one stop to his league-leading 28 in this one, as two of Waterloo's three shots on goal found the back of the net.
It was Kevin Espiro (Mississauga/Burlington League 1) who added the insurance marker in the 76th minute, giving him an OUA third-best four points on the season.
The Warriors' men's team is also in St. Catharine's to take on the Badgers on Sunday. Kick-off is set for 3:15 PM, the game can be viewed for free on OUA.tv.
