Men's soccer unable to find offence in opening weekend

Saturday, Sept. 3 vs. Guelph
Guelph 2, Waterloo 0

The Waterloo men's soccer team opened their season at home with a 2-0 loss to the visiting Guelph Gryphons on Saturday.

Waterloo controlled the first half of the game putting the Gryphons on their heels but Guelph would weather the storm taking advantage of sloppy defence in the 45th minute to take a 1-0 lead.  Drew Gowan (Welland, Ont.) was at the right spot picking up a loose ball in the Warriors crease to give Guelph the lead heading into the half.

The second half saw Waterloo push back but the black and gold were unable to solve Gryphon keeper Chad Paparoni (Burlington, Ont.).

The Gryphons would extend their lead to 2-0 with a goal off the foot of Robert Murphy (Ottawa, Ont.) past Warrior netminder Hansel Paico-Avilez (Oakville/) (Waterloo, Ont.) to secure the victory and hand Waterloo their first loss of the season.

Next up for the Warriors (0-0-1) is a meeting with powerhouse York Lions (0-0-1) on Sunday at Warrior Field.

Sunday, Sept. 4 vs. York
York 3, Waterloo 0

The Warriors welcomed the York Lions in their first ever match on Warrior Field dropping their second straight game 3-0.

The Lions showed why they are ranked no. 2 in the country taking it to the Warriors in the first half with goals by Alon Badat (Thornhill, Ont) and Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) at the 30th and 45th minute.

Down 2-0 heading into the second half the Warriors tried to pressure the Lions defence but the squad in red would neutralize the attack and add an insurance marker at the 65th minute with rookie midfielder Charlie Trafford (Calgary, Alta.) notching his first goal as a Lion to secure a 3-0 victory over the Warriors.

Waterloo will hope to find their offence next week as they battle the UOIT Ridgebacks on Wedneday, Sept. 7.
