LONDON, Ont. - A valiant second-half effort while down a man wasn't enough in Waterloo's season opener in London, as they fell 1-0 to the Western Mustangs on Friday.
A largely uneventful first half ended scoreless, with the Warriors managing just one shot to the Mustangs' six.
Early in the second frame, Max Aikman (Toronto, ONT/Humberside Collegiate Institute) was shown a red card and ejected from the game.
Waterloo did well to hold off the Western attack while playing with only ten men, but eventually the Mustangs broke through. Gavin Goddard's goal, assisted by Stefan Musta, broke the tie in the 76th minute.
Only seven of Western's 16 shots challenged Warriors keeper Llorin-Alexander Lopez, three of which came from Goddard. Mustangs keeper Ben Choudhry required only two saves for the clean sheet.
Waterloo will host the Brock Badgers on Sunday at 3:15 on Warrior Field in their home opener.
