The Waterloo Warriors men's rugby team put together a dominant offensive performance on Sunday, September 27th, defeating the York Lions 79-12.
Captain Thomas Wells-Richards led the Warriors' attack with an impressive 27 points, finding the try line multiple times to help Waterloo build a commanding lead.
Matthew Ball (Waterloo, ONT/Kitchener Collegiate and Vocational School) also made a major impact with a golden foot, converting six kicks for 12 points.
Waterloo's scoring was spread throughout the lineup, with several other players contributing tries of their own as the Warriors continued to apply pressure and extend their lead. The team's strong offensive execution, combined with a solid defensive effort, allowed Waterloo to control the match from start to finish.
For Waterloo's starting 8 man,
Spencer Makela (Brantford, ONT/Assumption College Brantford), the match was an opportunity for the entire team to make an impact, particularly players who have seen less action this season.
"It was fun. Everyone played hard. It was good to get out there," said Makela. "We had some guys come out that haven't played a lot this season and put in a good shift, and we came out with a big win today."
Makela praised the team's intensity from the opening whistle, saying the Warriors "came out with fire straight from the beginning and stuck with it until the 80th minute."
Several newer players stood out throughout the match, including
Myles Grosse (Newmarket, ONT/Huron Heights Secondary School),
Matthew Riley (North Vancouver, BC/Collingwood School),
Kalem Balodis (Hopewell, NSX/Northumberland Regional High School),
Micah Janzen (Waterloo, ONT/Rockway Mennonite Collegiate),
Matt Totzke (Kitchener, ONT/St. Marys Highschool) and
Max Wickett (Maryhill, ONT/Elmira District Secondary School). Their contributions helped Waterloo maintain its momentum and complete the convincing 79-12 victory.
Waterloo is headed to Kingston for its next match against Queen's on October 3rd at 2:30 p.m. There's plenty more rugby happening next weekend here in Waterloo, as the women's rugby team takes on York on Sunday, October 4th at 1:00 PM.
