The Waterloo Warriors women's rugby team secured a 25-10 victory over the Trent Excalibur on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors put together a strong team performance, battling throughout the match and continuing to build momentum as the game progressed. Waterloo found its rhythm as the contest went on, putting together key plays on both sides of the ball to come away with the 25-10 win.
"It was a good evening. We started putting things together, and things started to roll for us," said the Waterloo coaching staff. "Definitely more to come."
The Warriors' success came as a complete team effort, with several athletes standing out throughout the contest. The coaching staff was unable to pinpoint a single player of the game, instead highlighting the strong collective performance from the entire squad.
Waterloo's captain,
Heavlyn Sekyere (Dundalk, ONT/St. Mary's High School), scored the first try of the season, creating momentum for the rest of the team to add points to the board.
Amy Best (Calgary, ALB/St. Mary's High School) and
Olivia Larssen (Burlington, ONT/Hillfield Strathallan College) each secured a try, while
Emmanuelle Beaulieu-Curry (Guelph, ONT/Père-René-de-Galinée) added to the score by scoring two tries. The whole team had beautiful offloads and quick feet, giving Trent a hard time defending against a strong Waterloo offence.
Defensively, the Warriors were on fire.
Rafaela Boronka (Wellesley, ONT/Waterloo Oxford Secondary School),
Heavlyn Sekyere (Dundalk, ONT/St. Mary's High School),
Amy Best (Calgary, ALB/St. Mary's High School),
Ava Jo Hayes (Whitby, ONT/Henry Street High School),
Raven Shulist (Grafton, ONT/Cobourg Collegiate Institute), and
Emmanuelle Beaulieu-Curry (Guelph, ONT/Père-René-de-Galinée) had multiple big tackles that shut Trent down.
Olivia Larssen (Burlington, ONT/Hillfield Strathallan College) was a big presence on the field as well, making some crucial open-field tackles that stopped Trent from scoring.
The coaching staff and Warriors will look to keep moving forward and continue to compete as they prepare for their next game on Saturday, September 19, against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
