The Waterloo Warriors women's rugby team came out with a hard-fought 36-26 victory over the York Lions on Sunday, October 4th. Both teams left it all on the field.
"Great game. A lot of passion. The girls put their blood, sweat and tears on the field," said Warriors player
Anita Osamede (Scarborough, Ont./Mary Ward). "Despite a shaky start, we kept our head in
it and pushed through, especially in the second half. Very proud of the girls. We really boshed on the field today."
Ava Jo Hayes (Whitby, ONT/Henry Street High School) was a standout for the Warriors, scoring two tries while making several big hits throughout the match.
Heavlyn Sekyere (Dundalk, ONT/St. Mary's High School) also made her presence felt with hard hits and strong runs, while
Hailey Czegeny (Beamsville, ONT/Eden High School) provided a strong defensive performance.
Adria Marsh (Cambridge, ONT/Jacob Hespeler Secondary School) helped the Warriors with several great kicks and a try, scoring 11 points for the team, while
Rafaela Boronka (Wellesley, ONT/Waterloo Oxford Secondary School) made an impact with strong plays and powerful runs down the field.
Olivia Larssen (Burlington, ONT/Hillfield Strathallan College),
Emmanuelle Beaulieu-Curry (Guelph, ONT/Père-René-de-Galinée), and
Amy Best (Calgary, ALB/St. Mary's High School) each added a try to Waterloo's offensive effort.
Waterloo's ability to respond after its early struggles and maintain its intensity through the second half proved crucial, allowing the Warriors to secure the 36-26 victory over York.
The women take on McMaster on Friday, October 9th, in Hamilton at 7:00 p.m. as they wrap up their regular season. Waterloo rugby returns on Sunday, October 18th, at 1:00 p.m., as the men's team takes on TMU Bold for its last regular-season game.
