The Warriors battled through a hard-fought match-up against the Western Mustangs this Saturday, ultimately falling 56-0.

Despite the final score, the Warriors brought intensity and determination to the field against a strong team in their 2026 home opener. Waterloo continued to compete throughout the match, embracing the challenge of facing a strong Western side and pushing themselves to raise their level of play.

"Excellent day of rugby. We had a ball," said Waterloo head coach Jay Shaw. "Western is an excellent team, and we enjoyed the competition and raising our bar to compete."

Ava Haynes stood out for the Warriors with an excellent performance, leading the team's efforts throughout the contest. Her awareness on the field, big tackles, and strong rucks helped set the tone for Waterloo as the Warriors continued to battle from start to finish.

The Warriors also received strong defensive performances from Heavlyn Sekyere (Dundalk, ONT/St. Mary's High School), Olivia Larrsen, and Rafaela Boronka (Wellesley, ONT/Waterloo Oxford Secondary School), who made several impactful plays and delivered big hits throughout the match.

Western's Katrina Wright recorded a hat trick in the contest, scoring three tries for the Mustangs.

The match provided an opportunity for several new Warriors to step onto the field and make an impact, adding valuable experience to a Waterloo squad that continues to build.

Waterloo will look to carry the intensity and lessons from Saturday's contest into its next matchup against Trent as the Warriors continue to raise their standards throughout the season.
