The Waterloo Warriors delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships, hosted by the Windsor Lancers from March 6-8. Competing against Canada's finest, the Warriors showcased their exceptional skill and resilience, achieving their highest women's team placement in over two decades.
Celia Markovinovic (Puslinch, ON)Â led the charge for the Warriors, competing in both the high jump and long jump. Her championship journey began on Friday evening in the long jump final, where she entered ranked sixth. Exceeding expectations, Celia Markovinovic (Puslinch, ON)Â soared to a remarkable second attempt jump of 6.17m, breaking her own varsity record. This incredible feat earned her a silver medal, Second-Team All-Canadian honors, and spots on both the OUA Top 10 and U SPORTS Top 12 All-Time lists. On the final day, despite a challenging series of attempts in the high jump, Celia cleared 1.69m to secure 5th place. Her contributions of 12 points were pivotal, propelling the women's team to an impressive 9th place finish with a total of 20 points.
Hillary Clark (Elliot Lake, ON) demonstrated her tactical prowess and determination in the 1000m and 1500m events. On Friday, she claimed a strong 5th place finish in the 1000m, clocking 2:48.66, her third fastest time ever. She returned to the track on Saturday, competing in the 1500m final, the fastest in U SPORTS history in a decade. Hillary Clark (Elliot Lake, ON) achieved a new personal best of 4:25.36, securing another 5th place finish. Contributing 8 critical points to the team, Hillary Clark (Elliot Lake, ON) cemented her status as one of Canada's top distance runners, inspiring her teammates and elevating the program's profile.
First year athlete Jordan Williams-Neheli (Milton, ON) made a remarkable debut at the championships, earning his spot in the 60m hurdles despite battling lingering injuries throughout the season. Ranked 14th nationally, Jordan Williams-Neheli (Milton, ON) delivered an impressive preliminary performance, clocking 8.52 seconds to finish 5th in his heat and 10th overall. While just shy of advancing, his U SPORTS Top 10 finish as a rookie was commendable. Jordan Williams-Neheli's (Milton, ON) discipline and resilience established him as the Warriors' top-performing male athlete at the championships and the second fastest hurdler in program history, just 0.07 seconds off the varsity record. With four of the top 10 performances ever recorded by a Warrior in the 60m hurdles, he has set the stage for future success.
The men's 4x400m relay team comprising Iyinoluwa Gbenjo (Kitchener, ON), Lucas Baranoski (Waterloo, ON), Riley Jacobs-Gamble (Owen Sound, ON), and Ben Lemon (Waterloo, ON)Â embodied the Warriors' competitive spirit. They delivered a determined performance, battling Dalhousie throughout the race and securing a 12th place finish.
Looking ahead, some Warriors alongside alumni competing with the Waterloo Track Club are preparing for the Athletics Canada 2025 Canadian Indoor Track & Field Championships. Others are taking a brief but well earned break before gearing up for the outdoor season. With a blend of immediate competition and focused preparation, the future of Waterloo's track and field program looks exceptionally bright.
