The Warriors had a packed weekend as February began, with the sprints, jumps, and hurdles squads competing at the York Open, while top distance runners traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, to race on the world's fastest indoor track.
In Boston,
Paige Breedon (Barrie, ON), a second-year optometry student, delivered a stellar performance, running a personal best of 9:52.01 in the 3000m. This time ranks her 4th on the Warriors All-Time List and sets her up for a competitive seed heading into championship season. Fellow optometry studentÂ
Hillary Clark (Elliot Lake, ON) followed up with a blazing 4:44.22 mile, breaking a 28-year-old school record previously held by Warrior Hall of Famer Sarah Dillabaugh (4:44.76, 1997). Clark's time also hit the U SPORTS auto-qualifying mark and currently ranks her 2nd in the country. Even more impressive, she did this in a stacked field featuring top NCAA athletes and Olympians.
Meanwhile, back at York,Â
Jai Sharma (Modinagar, IN) threw a season's best 12.91m in shot put, securing 7th place in a highly competitive field. CaptainÂ
Celia Markovinovic (Puslinch, ON) dominated long jump, adding 19cm to her PB with a huge leap of 6.02m, a U SPORTS auto-qualifier that also shattered a 40-year-old school record held by Sylvia Malgadey-Forgrave, placing her at the top of UW's all-time list.
On the track, rookieÂ
Silas Coxson (Kitchener, ON) impressed in the 60m, running a personal-best 7.08 in the heats and improving to 7.06 in the finals, finishing 11th overall. In the 300m,Â
Brielle Fernandez (Hong Kong, HK) (42.17) and
Emmanuela Odukoya (Toronto, ON)Â (43.01) set season and personal bests for the women. The men's 300m featured a school top-10 performance fromÂ
Iyinoluwa Gbenjo (Kitchener, ON) (35.37), along with personal bests from rookies
Riley Jacobs-Gamble (Owen Sound, ON),
Owen Goodwin (Bonshaw, PEI), and
Raymond Siebert (Burk's Falls, ON).
The relays closed out the meet on a high note. The women's 4x400m team ran a season's best, led by PB relay splits from Odukoya,
Nicole Schindler (Waterloo, ON), and
Ava Duchene (Fergus, ON), as well as a strong opening leg from Fernandez. The men's 4x400m squad followed suit, running a season's best of 3:24.26, with standout splits fromÂ
Lucas Baranoski (Waterloo, ON) and rookie Jacobs-Gamble, who clocked a 51.0 PB, over a second faster than his previous best.
With strong performances, school records, and U SPORTS qualifiers, the Warriors are hitting their stride at the perfect time. Next up, the team heads to the Windsor Team Challenge before splitting between the Hal Brown Memorial (Toronto), Guelph Last Chance, and Ottawa as they fine-tune for the OUA Championships, just three weeks away! It's shaping up to be an exciting February for the Warriors!
