Warriors defeat Carleton, struggle against McGill and Toronto

For the second consecutive weekend, the Warriors had a three-match weekend on their schedule. The results were mixed as they won against Carleton and lost against McGill and Toronto but all produced fine efforts over the course of the three days.

On Friday the Warriors hosted the McGill Redmen and were beaten soundly by the visitors. The Warriors did not play badly; the lopsided score is a reflection of the strength and tennis skills of the McGill women. Waterloo was without their no. 2 player Nathalie Skaf (Mississauga) for the entire weekend due to an injury but it would not have changed the overall result had she played as the McGill team were too strong and consistent. No. 2 Colleen Fernandes (Mississauga) and no. 5 Emma Tamlin (Lindsay/Fenelon Falls Secondary School) had competitive matches but the greater experience of the Redmen won through in the end.

After a late night finish on Friday against McGill, the Warriors were back on court on Saturday to face Carleton, a newcomer to the OUA league this year. With another late start time, the teams agreed to play the singles first and then the doubles only if necessary.  The prospect of an early end to the evening was incentive for the Waterloo team to do well and they did exactly that. They took five of the six singles making the doubles component unnecessary.  It was an earlier than expected end to the evening and welcomed by the team.

The Warriors were back on court on Sunday at noon, this time to play University of Toronto at its Scarborough campus. Playing outdoors on a warm and sunny day, the Warriors thrived in the fresh air. The women played their singles first and at the end of the round, the score was tied at 3-3. The doubles round was the decider. The Blues prevailed at no. 1 and no. 3 but Warriors no 2 pair of Colleen Fernandes (Mississauga) and Emma Tamlin (Lindsay/Fenelon Falls Secondary School) were on form and they won their match 8-4. Fernandes had earlier won a three setter in her singles. She was the most consistent and successful player of the Warriors on the weekend.  Other noteworthy efforts came from rookies Manasi Guggali (Brampton) and Emma Tamlin (Lindsay/Fenelon Falls Secondary School).

The Warriors head to London next weekend to participate in the season ending OUA championships October 3, 4, 5th.
