Women's tennis fall to Mustangs and tie Gryphons in weekend action

Western 6, Waterloo 1

The Western Mustangs women were in town to play the women Warriors on Saturday at the Waterloo Tennis Club in their last official match of the 2019-20 season.

While their male counterparts were creating an upset win, the women results went according to form. While the Warriors are a stronger team overall than last year's, they are still a level below that of the powerhouses of which Western is the most dominant at this time.  Western women, like their men, are the defending OUA Champions and also finalists at the national universities championships held in August earlier this year. Vanessa Seto (Richmond Hill/) was the lone winner for the Warriors.  Noteworthy though is the fact that the scores of the individual matches are not as one-sided as they once were. With five rookies on the team and four in the starting lineup, the future looks promising for the next few years.

Doubles:
Adema Tursunkhanova (Almaty/)/Vanessa Seto (Richmond Hill/) lost to Madeline Benn/Leanna Carpino  7-8(5)
Nancy Wu (Scarborough/)/Mackenzie Dumais (New Hamburg/) lost to Paige Baynham/ Angela Chen 2-8
Evi Zafiris/Savanna Cornfield (Vancouver/) lost to Laura Bees/Sophie Bui  3-8

Singles:
Tursunkhanova lost to Chen 6-2, 1-6, 4-6
Zafiris lost to Bui  1-6, 2-6
Seto bt Baynham 8-6
Skaf lost to Carpino 5-8
Wu lost to Benn 2-8
Dumais lost to Dana Singer 5-7, 1-6
Waterloo 2, Guelph 2

Sunday's game against Guelph was a friendly match in more ways than one.  Guelph unable to field a full team and only able to muster up three women still made an impact as two of their women, both exchange students, were very useful players.  Play was adapted to give the three women play, which included Waterloo 'donating' one of their women to play on the Guelph team so the visitors could field two doubles teams.

Not realizing the strength of the top two women, Waterloo's no. 2 and 6 opted to play against them. It was a useful exercise despite the loss by both Warriors.  They regarded the regarded the losses as added experience and match play. The visitors, exchange students from Denmark and Scotland, were happy for the play and the post- match camaraderie with the Waterloo women. Of the three singles played, Waterloo won one of the matches when Eva Xie (Markham/), the team's reserve was given an opportunity to play. She showed her great improvement mostly gained over the last two weeks winning 6-4, 6-1.

Though the tie against Guelph was a shortened one, it provided for moments of warmth and friendliness that would not otherwise have been experienced in a more formal match.
