Gryphons explode in second half to top Warriors

The Warrior women's rugby team opened their season with a 43-5 loss to the powerhouse Guelph Gryphons on Friday night at the CIF fields.  The young Warrior squad stuck with a talented and deep Gryphon side but ran out of steam in the second half to drop their opening game of 2013.

The Gryphons wasted little time getting on the board as Shannon Spurrell opened the scoring for the visiting side five minutes into the contest.  Waterloo flexed their muscles only three minutes later as Kourtney King drove it in for the try to even the score 5-all.

Guelph would regain the lead two minutes later on a Devon Keys try and would jump out ahead by 10 as Daria Keane would power home her one of two tries to close out the half.  The Keane try was setup beautifully with a nice near side run by Brittany Priddle.

Heading into the second half up 15-5 the Gryphons would keep the petal down as Keane would plow home her second try.  Following a successful convert by Stephanie Tibelius Guelph would jump out to a comfortable 23-5 lead.  The next 20 points would go the way of the visitors as they would cruise past Waterloo with the 43-5 win.

The Warriors should be proud of their effort against a very stingy Gryphons squad and will look to rebound next Saturday when they host cross-town rival Laurier at noon.
