Warriors vs. WLU - Sept. 5

Men's Soccer

Warriors open season with dissapointing loss

Sunday, September 5, 2010
Laurier 3, Waterloo 0

The Warriors opened their season at home with a battle against cross-town rival Laurier Golden Hawks. Following a scoreless first half where the Warriors looked destined to open the scoring, the men in black crumbled and gave up three unanswered goals to fall 3-0 to the Hawks.

Waterloo found themselves in penalty trouble early and often and were forced to play cautiously with five yellow cards on the table. In the 53rd minute of the match Golden Hawk David Corazzola (Woodbridge, Ont.) got Laurier on to the score board with a great shot from midfield. Stephen Hay (Oakville, Ont.) would get his first goal in the 79th minute, while Sandro Stojakovic (Waterloo, Ont.) netted his on a penalty kick in the 90th.

The game wasn't the only loss for the Warriors, as anticipated starting goalie for the season Kyle Cirone (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, ON) broke his hand at training camp one day prior to their home opener. Cirone is expected to be out 4-6 weeks leaving the door open for first year Rob McMillan (Newburgh/) (Newburgh, ON). McMillan made crucial saves at timely moments to keep the Warriors in the match but the black and gold were unable to produce anything offensively.
The Warriors (0-1-0) hope to forget the disappointing loss with a win in next week's match on Saturday, September 11 as they face the Guelph Gryphons (0-2-0) who are also in search of their first win. Waterloo returns home the next day (Sept. 12) to host the McMaster Marauders (0-1-1) at the CIF Fields.
