Gryphons, Murphy down Warriors in Black and Gold Game

Full back Caitlin Martin breaks tackles in front of 2,500 frosh

The number two ranked Guelph Gryphons downed the Warriors 25-0 during the annual black and gold game in front of 2,500 fans at the Columbia Icefields in Waterloo.  Fourth year 8-man Jacey Murphy (Alliston, Ont.) scored three consecutive tries in the second half to solidify the victory for the Gryphons.

The first half saw end to end action with third year centre Britt Benn (Napanee, Ont.) scoring the only points of the half.  The Warriors looked poised to even the score at five but were unable to cap off a promising run down the field by the black and gold.  The Warriors were in tough against the powerhouse Gryphons holding their own down only five after the first half.

It would be all Gryphons in the second with three tries by Murphy and one final try scored by rookie hooker, Breanna Newman (Belleville, Ont.) to seal the victory.

The Warriors showed they can compete with a top team in the Guelph Gryphons and have many positives to take out of their season opening game.  Spending most of the game holding the line on defence, the Warriors showed their agility and endurance with several key counter attacks throughout the game.  Rookie Emily Sanderson (New Hamburg/) (New Hamburg, Ont.) proved she belongs in the starting line up with many significant runs up field.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Warriors (0-1-0) as they travel to London on Saturday, September 18 to face the always tough Western Mustangs while the Gryphons (1-0-0) return home for a match up with the Trent Excalibur (0-1-0).   Both games set for a 1:00 pm kick off.
