Four Warriors named OUA men's rugby all-stars

Four Warrior men's rugby players were named OUA all-stars on Friday.  Third year centre Richard Lebel (Waterloo, Ont.) led the way for the Warriors all season long with his spectacular up-field runs and reliable convert kicks.  Lebel was third in OUA scoring with eight tries and 13 converts for 69 points.  Joining Lebel is flyhalf Zach Bogdon (Cambridge, Ont.) who scored five tries on the season.  Wrapping up the all-star selections is fifth year 8-man Zach Bentley (Picton, Ont.) and third year flanker Ben Ben Vandenberg (Centreville, Ont.).  The Warriors finished the season 3-4-1 and lost in the OUA quarter-finals 29-10.

HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2010 men's rugby All-Stars and major award winners. Finalists Western and McMaster took home the most awards this season.

 

The most valuable player award was awarded to Rory Tomlinson (Alliston, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs. The winger was tied for sixth in league scoring, tallying 40 points. Tomlinson is tied for first in the league in tries scored in the regular season with eight. The third-year was a key player for Western's offence this year, leading his team to an 8-0 finish. Tomlinson was also named an All-Star for the second time in his career.

 

The rookie of the year plays for the McMaster Marauders. Scrum-half Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga, Ont.) scored 51 points this season. His points total earned him fifth place in scoring in the league, and top scorer for the Marauders this season. The rookie made a big impact on the talented Marauder squad and will make his first championship appearance on Sunday. Ferguson was also named an All-Star for 2010.

 

The most all-around player of the 2010 season was awarded to Andrew Crow (Victoria, B.C.). The third-year 8-man from the Western Mustangs earned the award for his outstanding work on defence and offence. Crow scored 30 points this year on six tries and was ranked tenth overall in OUA. The Mustang earned his second All-Star award of his career.

 

Shaun Allen of the McMaster Marauders earned the OUA men's rugby Coach of the Year award for 2010. As an assistant coach for the Marauders from 2006-2010, Allen won two OUA gold medals and an OUA bronze. In his first year stepping up as head coach of the Marauders, Allen has proven that transferring his skill and knowledge of the game has paid off, earning a spot in the finals.

 

The Western Mustangs took home the most hardware for the 2010 season. Prop David Jacks (Tottenham, Ont.) finished his fifth-year with the third OUA All-Star award of his career. Also joining Tomlinson and Crow on the list was centre Conor Trainor (Alliston, Ont.), prop Mike Penczak (Brantford, Ont.) and fullback Tom Bridger (Victoria, B.C.). Bridger was fourth in league scoring with 66 points on four tries and 23 converts.

 

Western's finals opponents the McMaster Marauders named five players to the All-Star Team. Ferguson was named to the list as well as 8-man Tyler Ardron (Lakefield, Ont.) who scored eight tries on the season and hooker John Williams (Stoney Creek, Ont.). Centre Sam Roberts (Oshawa, Ont.) and flanker Michael Sheppard (Brampton, Ont.) earned the second All-Star awards of their careers.

 

Last year's champions, the Queen's Gaels, also named five All-Stars from their team. Second-year centre Dan Moor (Toronto) was the leagues leading scorer this season with 84 points. Moor earned those points from four tries, 26 converts and four penalty goals. Also named to the All-Star team was hooker Mason Curtis (Cobourg, Ont.), lock Hank McQueen (Vancouver, B.C.), halfback Andrew Kirk (Paris, Ont.) and fullback Mike Wong (Barrie, Ont.). All five of the Queen's All-Stars earned the award for the first time in their careers.

 

Samuel Rimmer (Cheltenham, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers was named an All-Star along with three of his teammates. Rimmer was second in league with 79 points this season, only six away from earning the top spot in scoring. The second-year fullback scored seven tries, ten converts and eight penalty goals in 2010. Joining Rimmer on the list for the Badgers was centre Mike Lambert (Goderich, Ont.), flanker Mike Berry (Brockville, Ont.) and flanker Ben Thompson (Whitby, Ont.).

 

The Waterloo Warriors men's rugby team named four All-Stars to the list this year. Two-time All-Star Richard Lebel (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, Ont.) was third in league scoring with 69 points in 2010. In his third year, the centre scored eight tries, 13 converts and one penalty goal. Fly half Zach Bogdon (Preston/) (Cambridge, Ont.), 8-man Zach Bentley (Picton/) (Picton, Ont.) and flanker Ben Vandenberg (Centreville/) (Centreville, Ont.) were also named All-Stars for the Warriors.

 

The Guelph Gryphons named three All-Stars for the 2010 season. Lock John Scott Beukeboom (Lindsay, Ont.) earned his second All-Star award in a row. Hooker Michael Reid (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and flanker Nathan Lippert (Oakville, Ont.) also made the team.

 

The Toronto Varsity Blues had three players that earn All-Star nods for the first time in their careers, two of them being rookies. Flanker David Balcom (Vancouver, B.C.), centre David Stockton (Vancouver, B.C.) and scrum-half Lee Nevitte (Toronto) were all named to the All-Star team this year.

 

Two players from the RMC Paladins made the cut for the 2010 All-Star Team. Prop Aaron Barry (Uxbridge, Ont.) and 8-man Clarke O'Reilly (Kitchener, Ont.) made the list. For the Laurier Golden Hawks, second row Jeff Pickel (St. Mary's, Ont.) and Alex St. John (Kitchener, Ont.) were both named All-Stars for the second year in a row.
