In a gritty battle between the Waterloo Warriors and the Brock Badgers, the Warriors prevailed with a 36-22 win.
It took the Warriors a moment to get settled into a rhythm in the opening of the match. While a huge run of almost half the field by Calum Hayes (Oakville, ON) brought a momentum shift with the Warriors now leading the match 14-12. This big run was followed shortly by another try from Rahul Modi (Waterloo, ON), making it 19-12. At this point it was clear the Warriors were warmed up, settled in, and ready for a Sunday of scoring. They continued to play the remainder of the first half with a commanding offensive pressure finding open spaces in the Badgers defense. The Warriors also played with a strong defensive wall, forcing fast turnovers and maintaining possessions.
The second half remained steady with no scoring in the first 20 minutes until the Badgers were able to break through the defensive wall, scoring a try but failing to convert on the kick as the ball deflected down off the crossbar. This kept the Warriors with a lead at 19-17. This was met immediately as William Nhanala (Waterloo, ON) made another big run only three minutes later to make the game 24-17. Matching the energy of this run, Thomas Wells Richards (Scarborough, ON) snagged an interception at the field half only moments after and ran it home to make the game 31-17. The game remained a back and forth battle, with the Warriors maintaining a majority of the possessions. Brock snuck in one more try to make it 31-22, but in the fashion of the day this was met by another rallying try from Calum Hayes (Oakville, ON) to set the final score for the day at 36-22.
Up next, the Warriors will take on the York Lions Sunday, September 15.
