Canada’s Men’s Golf Team Claims Silver at 2024 FISU World University Championships

Canada's men's golf team earned a second-place finish in the team event at the 2024 FISU World University Golf Championships, held from August 27-30 in Kuortane-Seinäjoki, Finland.

Tara Savoie, the head coach of the Warriors Men's Golf team, lauded her squad's performance at the Championships. Reflecting on the experience, she said, "It's been an honour and a privilege to represent our country and the University of Waterloo, while supporting these great athletes at this Championship."

Savoie's comments highlighted both the challenges and successes of the week. She added, "The local organizing committee, the people of Kuortane Olympic Training Center, Ruuhikoski Golf, and their many volunteers have been wonderful; we thank them for their assistance throughout the week. This support was especially crucial at the start when we only had two sets of golf clubs for the first practice round leading up to the tournament."

Canada's men's team, under Savoie's leadership, delivered an outstanding performance. The team was led by William Forgues of Université Laval, who achieved a tie for seventh place in the individual standings. Forgues finished the tournament at two-under par, with a notable four-under 68 in the final round.

Anthony Jomphe of Université de Montréal finished tied for 21st at eight-over par, while JP Kahlert of UBC ended in 24th place with a 10-over par total.

The Canadian team was 11 strokes behind the top finishers from Spain, who also had two golfers on the individual podium. This silver medal represents Canada's best result at the World University Championships, surpassing their previous third-place tie in 2014.

Savoie commended her athletes, noting, "The athletes showed resilience and determination throughout the week," highlighting their significant achievement.

In the women's team competition, the Canadian squad—featuring Morgan Best (UFV), Ela Jones (University of Guelph), and Kristi Godkin (Wilfrid Laurier University)—finished in 12th place.

The Canadian teams were guided by coaches Tara Savoie (University of Waterloo), Adam Wagner (University of Windsor), and Kevin Corriveau (St. Clair College).
