WATERLOO, Ont. - This week, the Waterloo Warriors golf teams are aiming to create more history as they head to the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club in Sudbury for the 2024 Canadian University Championship, presented by BDO, taking place from June 2 to 6.
The Canadian University Championship, now in its 20th year, was created by Golf Canada in 2003 to provide the top university golfers in the country with an opportunity to compete in a national championship. Opened in 1922, Idylwylde Golf & Country Club is a parkland-style golf course situated in the center of Sudbury, nestled between Laurentian University and Lake Ramsey and Nepahwin. Stretching 6,656 yards, the course offers picturesque views of the lake, which comes into play at various points throughout.
The event features the top college and university golf teams from across Canada and includes 17 U SPORTS men's teams. The Championship is a four round event with a cut taking place after the third round on Wednesday.
The black and gold look to add another trophy to their collection after the Warriors men's golf team achieved a remarkable feat this season by clinching the team and individual titles at the 2023 OUA Championship.
2023 OUA gold medalist Zach Burt (Fergus/) and silver medalist Jack Deighan (Cambridge/) leads a veteran group that includes Graem Costigan (Cambridge/), Noah Lebrasseur (Niagara Falls/), and Jacob Foxworthy (Waterloo/), who will reunite under the guidance of OUA men's team coach of the year Tara Savoie to compete in the men's division.
The University of Victoria Vikes men's team clinched their inaugural national championship in 2023. They maintained a one-shot lead going into the final round and scored 10-under on Friday, ending the tournament at 14-under, a substantial 13 shots ahead of the Université Laval Rouge et Or. The division included teams from Canada-West (5), Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (2), Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (5), and Ontario University Athletics (8).
The women's team of the Warriors, who secured the fifth position at the 2023 OUA Championship, will be determined to make an impact at the national level. Lead by Hana Yoshida (Richmond Hill/), with her teammates Abby Baker, Alyssa Jamal (Mombasa/) and Riley Purdie (LaSalle/).
