Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors defend home court in 1-1 weekend with Mustangs

The Waterloo Warriors men's basketball team split their season series with the No.9 ranked Western Mustangs this past weekend. Both matchups were highly contested contests with the winning margins coming down to a few baskets at either side.

On Friday night the Warriors traveled to London to take on the Mustangs at Alumni Hall. The black and gold got off to a blistering start shooting 69% from the floor and taking an eight-point lead into the first intermission. A back and forth second quarter saw both sides connecting and defending at a high level as the Warriors took that same eight-point lead into the locker room for half time.

The Mustangs would come out firing in the third and narrowed the Warriors lead to just one going into the fourth. Some key buckets by Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate) and Justin Malnerich (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary) were key to keep the Warriors within striking distance right to the final horn, however, Western Men's basketball all time leading scorer and fifth year wing, Omar Shiddo proved to be too much as his game high 31 points led the Mustangs to an 86-82 victory. Nnadi and Malnerich led the Warriors with 18 and 13 respectively while Kuel Thomas (Kitchener, ON/Huron Heights Secondary) provide a nice spark off the bench with 13 of his own.

On the second night of the back-to-back the Warriors once again came out hot against the Mustangs. In front of a filled Physical Activities Centre, the black and gold stormed out to an early 19-11 lead. The Mustangs would prove once again however that they were not going to go down without a fight as they outscored the Warriors 24-17 in the second frame as Waterloo went into halftime once again with a narrow lead.

The third quarter is where the Warriors truly flipped the script form Friday night as they erupted, going on a 15-2 to start the frame capped off by an emphatic dunk by Kuel Thomas (Kitchener, ON/Huron Heights Secondary). The With both teams playing hard nosed and scrappy throughout the quarter, the Warriors found themselves once again leading going into the final frame up 57-51.

It was all toughness and grit for the Warriors to close out the final ten minutes. In a low scoring quarter, the Warriors relied on their defensive tenacity and offensive efficiency to get them over the finish line and secure their first win over a nationally ranked opponent in over 2 years. While Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate) continued to bring his scoring presence for the Warriors, scoring 14 points to go along with 2 steals, it was first year guard Raf Llorin (Cambridge, ON/) and third year guard Ethan Andrew (Brantford, ON/North Park) who brought an unlikely spark to the Warriors offence on Saturday evening. Llorin was fantastic throughout leading the Warriors with 19 points wile adding three assists, while Andrew added a season high 10 points with 7 rebounds.

The Warriors will be on the road in Sault Ste. Marie this coming weekend to wrap up the regular season before the Christmas and Exam break as they face the Algoma Thunderbirds. You can catch the action on OUA TV Friday November 26th at 8:00pm and Saturday November 27th at 6:00pm.
