Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors grind out two road wins over Thunderbirds

It was two must-win games for the men's basketball team who took on the Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie this weekend and the Warriors did just that to improve to 4-2 and head into the holiday break riding a three game win streak.

On Friday night, the Warriors snuck past the T-Birds by a score of 64-60 thanks to a strong performance by Justin Malnerich (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary) who led all players with 19 points. Malnerich went 6-for-15 from the field, draining four from beyond the arc. He also went a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo, ON/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) was solid chipping in with a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate) also hit double digits in points with 10 of his own. The Warriors were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch to earn the four point win. Overall they went 10-for-12 from the line.

On Saturday, Waterloo used a big third quarter where they outscored the T-Birds 24-15 to earn a 78-66 win over Algoma for their third straight win. Kuel Thomas (Kitchener, ON/Huron Heights Secondary) was on fire in this one with 20 points shooting an outstanding 82% from the field while going 2-for-5 from the free throw line. Hodzic and Nnadi both hit double digits for a second straight night with 14 and 11 points respectively. Jayden Grewal (Oakville, ON/Kings Christian Collegiate) rounded out Waterloo's attack with 12 points including three made 3-pointers.

The Warriors sit in a tie with Western for third in the OUA west with eight points and will now enjoy some time off before getting back into regular season action on Friday, January 14 against Brock on Carl Totzke Court.
