With a good number of student-athletes deciding to remain at home, outside of Waterloo, our groups are half the size we normally have this time of year. Those out of town are provided with workouts either through email or the team calendar to allow everyone the opportunity to train wherever they reside.
Building off a great 2019 season the Cross Country team has been improving their fitness and preparing for the upcoming Don Mills Open, being held virtually this year on October 18. For more information on how you can participate please email warriorsxcountry@uwaterloo.ca.
Incoming PhD student and former Calgary Dino Alexander James, along with first year Olivia Vanleeuwen show promise for the distance crew training with the team in Waterloo. James put up the fastest time this past weekend over a 6km time trial. He will also look to aid the men's track team coming off the 2020 indoor track season with bests of 3:52.15 in the 1500m and 8:19.22 in the 3000m.
The Cross Country team will continue to build fitness over the months and prepare for a full 2021 XC season.
Awaiting the decision on Winter sports the track and field members are eager to train setting goals for the 2021 Championships. Three members of the men's 4x400m record team return along with the entire women's 4x400m team. OUA gold medalists Hannah Blair (pentathlon) and Janelle Clarke (long jump) along with team captain Ashley Blayney-Hoffer lead the women's team. Clarke was named Female Rookie of the Year at the 2021 Athletic Banquet. Fourth year Solomon Davidson (OUA silver in high jump), third year Immanuel Onyemah (U SPORTS bronze 4x200m) and fifth year Owen Babcock (U SPORTS bronze 4x200m, OUA silver 4x400m & record holder) are key members to the men's team this 2021 season.
With the uncertainty of the 2021 season the track team is focusing on training wisely aiming to keep everyone physically and mentally fresh to be able to handle whatever may come next.
