Warriors edged by Marauders and Badgers in opening weekend

McMaster 4, Waterloo 3

Like their male counterparts, the women Warriors had a tough time adjusting to the outdoor and weather conditions. Even without a full complement of players, McMaster managed to pull out a win.
Short of a player and with only two pairs able to play, McMaster won both and gained the doubles point.

In singles, only Jessie Cui (Picking/) at no.#4 was able to get a complete win. The match which held both teams' interest at the end however, was the decider and last match on court played at the no. 5 position by rookie Dana Iskoldski (Toronto/) who lost in three sets to Alina Morales-Negra.  Iskoldski, playing in her first varsity singles match or competitive match for that matter, showed no visible signs of nervousness despite the fact that she was playing the deciding match and watched by all the players who gave encouraging support to their respective teammate after every point won.

Doubles:
Nancy Baloescu (Kitchener/)/Ava Skuse (London/) lost to Julia Schuster/ Priti Gujadhur 6-8
Nancy Wu/Jessie Cui (Picking/) lost to Adele Lee/Jayda Hunte 2-8
Dana Iskoldski (Toronto/)/ Nishi Shah (Maple/) won by default

Singles:
Baloescu bt Schuster 7-6, retired
Skuse lost 4-6, 5-7
Wu lost to Priti Gujadhur 2-6, 0-6
Ciu bt Jayda Hunte 6-3, 6-3
Iskoldski lost to Morales-Negra 6-3,4-6, 6-2
Nishi Shah (Maple/) won by default

Brock 4, Waterloo 3

Unlike their male counterparts, the women Warriors were not able to overcome their opponents on Sunday, the Brock Badgers.

In doubles, Waterloo's no.1 pair of Nancy Baloescu (Kitchener/) and Ava Skuse (London/) lost 7-8 in a tie break. They had  led 5-1 but let the lead slip away. No 2 pair of Nancy Wu and Jessie Ciu played their best doubles together so far and won their match 8-3. The inexperienced pair of rookies, Dana Isoldski and Nishi Shah (Maple/) lost 1-8.

Three of the singles matches were played as pro sets after Brock subsequently won three of the singles played after gaining the doubles point. This meant Brock had an unassailable lead. Still good wins from Nancy Baloescu (Kitchener/) at no. 1 winning 8-3, Nancy Wu redeemed herself from the previous day beating her opponent 8-4, and Jessie Cui (Picking/) kept her nerve to finish off a close match winning over Claire Alexander 8-6.

The Warriors, both men and women will face their sternest challenge of the season next weekend when they host McGill Friday 21 at 3 p.m. and Western Sunday 23 at noon at the Waterloo Tennis Club.
