The Warriors women's hockey team picked up four points in their first home stand of the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Nipissing and a 3-2 regulation win over Laurentian.
On Saturday afternoon in their home opener,
Angela MacDonald (Kitchener/) fired home her first of the season and 19th career goal with the black and gold on the power play.
Taytum Clairmont (Waterloo/) and
Alison Hanson (North York/) earned the helpers.
The Warriors held on to their 1-0 lead thanks to some outstanding goaltending from
Amanda Smith (Burlington/) but Nipissing prevailed, finding the equalizer with just 1:45 left in the third.
The Lakers then wasted little time picking up the extra point as Kaley Tienhaara scored at 1:36 of the extra frame for the 2-1 win. Smith turned aside 27 shots in the OT loss.
On Sunday, Waterloo came out firing in the opening 10 minutes as
Taytum Clairmont (Waterloo/) put her side up 1-0. Clairmont found
Cynthia Cavanagh (Scarborough/) streaking up the middle of the ice and Cavanagh went in one-on-one and got away a nice shot that was cleaned up on the backhand by Clairmont for the goal at 8:30 of the first. It was her first career goal in the black and gold.
Just two minutes later
Dollee Meigs (Owen Sound/) sniped her first as a Warrior on a beautiful shot top corner past the glove side of the Laurentian keeper Karen Collins.
Waterloo extended their lead to 3-0 as
Emma Pye (Oshawa/) took a nice feed from Clairmont on the backhand and chipped it over Collins, for her first of the season.
Trisha Cho (Mississauga/) earned the second helper.
Down 3-0 midway through the second, Laurentian started to find their legs and would shift the momentum in their favour. With just 1:36 remaining in the period, Carley Olivier got the Voyageurs on the board.
Waterloo held strong in the third to maintain their two goal lead before Olivier put home another goal to cut Waterloo's lead down to 3-2. The Warriors would however shut it down to pick up the three points.
Alysha Letwin (Barrie/) got her first career win in her first start as a Warrior making 19 stops while Collins allowed three goals on 27 shots.
Waterloo have just one game in the upcoming weekend as they travel to Windsor on Sunday to face the Lancers at 2pm.
