The Warriors men's rugby team earned a hard fought 21-5 victory over Trent in the OUA quarter-finals on Saturday night at Warrior Field.
Waterloo batted both Trent and the elements on a brutally cold and rainy night but came away with the convincing win to punch their ticket to the semifinals next weekend in Kingston vs. Queen's.
Waterloo opened the scoring in the 10th minute as
Sam Newhook (St.John's/St. Johns) found an opening down the sideline and ran it in for the games first try.
Mitch Voralek (Waterloo/) used the wind at his back and hit the convert to put Waterloo up 7-0.
Just five minutes later
Paul Kaija (Sarnia/) punched in another try at the line and Voralek again hit the convert to put Waterloo up 14-0 into the half.
In the second half, Trent used the wind to their advantage controlling most of the play but Waterloo's defence put up a wall at the line to prevent the Excalibur from getting in.
The Excalibur offence would however remain persistent, eventually breaking the strong Warrior defence for the try. After a missed convert Waterloo held a 14-5 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The Warriors felt the Trent pressure and went to work with their offence, scoring one more try as
Harrison Cooper (Cobourg/) drove it home. Another Voralek kick made it 21-5 for the black and gold and they would cruise to the finish line. Voralek finished with a game high six points in the match giving him 130 on the season.
Waterloo will now travel to Kingston next weekend to face the top-seeded Queen's Gaels with a berth to the OUA final on the line.
