Warriors earn first win in final weekend before OUA Champs

York 5, Waterloo 2

The women Warriors wrapped up their final weekend of regular play this past Friday and Saturday playing at home at the Waterloo Tennis Club.

On Friday, the York Lions, a perennial power house in the women division visited Waterloo and handed the host a 5-2 drubbing. York was the last official OUA game for the Warriors of the regular season.

Even though the score line was 2-5 to York, Waterloo won only one of those points as the second came as a default win because the Lions were one player short of the required six for a full team.

The win came off the racquet of no. 1 Nancy Baloescu (Kitchener/). She beat her no.1 counterpart 6-3, 6-1 in singles.   An encouraging performance from no. 3 Ava Skuse (London/) who lost her match 7-5, 7-6 losing the tie-break at 6.  All in all, it was a good tune up for the following day match against Guelph and the OUA Championships next weekend.

Doubles:
Nancy Baloescu (Kitchener/) and Nancy Wu lost to Sara Krupica and Vanessa Ereqi 5-8
Ava Skuse (London/) and Eva Xie (Markham/) lost to Lobna Hassan and Dina Hassan 0-8
Dana Iskoldski (Toronto/) and Nishi Shah (Maple/) won by default

Singles:
Baloescu bt Krupica 6-3, -6-1
Wu lost to  Ereqi 1-6, 4-6
Skuse lost to Lobna Hassan 5-7, 6-7 (6)
Xie lost to Aryanne Dixon-Hart 0-6, 0-6
Shah lost to Dina Hassan 3-6, 1-6
Waterloo 5 vs Guelph 2

The Warriors were back on the courts on Saturday, this time to face the Guelph Gryphons, an 'unofficial OUA' team, to wrap up the regular season.  This time it was the Warriors who prevailed over a less experienced team winning 5-2.

The Warriors almost had a sweep of the doubles matches but the no. 3 pair of rookies Eva Xie (Markham/) and Nishi Shah (Maple/) couldn't quite pull it off. They lost 7-8.   In singles, again led by Baloescu, the Warriors won four of the six singles and with the doubles points won the tie 5-2.  While the win was not against one of the stronger or more experienced teams, it still provided a boost of confidence and positivism for the Warriors as they prepare for next weekend OUA Championships at Mayfair East in Markham, Oct 5-7.

Doubles:
Nancy Balosecu and Nancy Wu bt Emilie Norris-Roosmor and Gauri Porwal 8-1
Ava Skuse (London/) and Jessie Cui (Picking/) bt Isabelle Aickler 8-1
Eva Xie (Markham/) and Nishi Shaf lost to Maggy Wilson-Lampron and Michelle Huang 7-8

Singles:
Baloescu bt Norris Roosmor 6-3, 6-0
Wu by Porwal 6-2, 6-0
Skuse bt Wilson-Lampron 6-0, 6-0
Cui lost to Gibbons 5-8
Dana Iskoldski (Toronto/) lost to Aickler 6-8
Shah bt Huang 8-3
