Thank you to Sam Charles of UBC Okanagan for the Video footageThe Waterloo men's curling team finished the CIS Championships with a 2-5 record beating Saint Mary's and Victoria. The roster made up of first and third years has a bright future ahead of them after gaining valuable experience at this year's championship tournament hosted by the Kelowna Curling Club.
Waterloo got off to a promising start in their opening game against Brock with a 6-2 lead after five ends but Brock would score eight in the final five ends to steal the game with a 10-8 victory. From there the Warriors seemed to lose their confidence dropping their next three games to Dalhousie (9-3), UBC Okanagan (8-3), and Alberta (10-4).
Waterloo remained resilient though and came back strong in their 10pm (EST) game on Monday with a big 8-6 win over Saint Mary's. In what was a mirror image game in their contest against Brock, Waterloo found themselves down 6-1 through five ends. With the hammer, Waterloo made it 6-2 in the sixth and then stole a point in each of the next three ends, making it a 6-5 game for the Huskies into the final end. Waterloo capped off the remarkable comeback in the 10
th end, stealing three more to win their first match of the CIS Championship by a score of 8-6.
With renewed confidence Waterloo won their second straight game in their opening match on Tuesday, with a 4-3 win over the Victoria Vikes.
Waterloo's final match was against the top seeded Laurier Golden Hawks who topped the Warriors 9-4 to improve to 6-1 in the championship. Waterloo fell to 2-5 and missed the playoffs.
The semifinals go today with Alberta taking on Brock while Laurier will battle Victoria.
It was a great showing by the black and gold in their first CIS Championship since the Warriors won it all in 2013 with Jake Walker as the skip. Waterloo beat the Alberta Golden Bears 7-5 in the CIS gold medal match.
