Warriors drop season opener in straight sets to Mac

Box Score The Waterloo women's volleyball team opened up their 2015-16 season with a tough 3-0 loss (14, 16, 11) to the always competitive McMaster Marauders Friday night in Hamilton.

Outside Joanna Jedrzejewska was unstoppable offensively for the Marauders, converting 12 of 22 hitting attempts versus just two errors (.455) and adding an ace for 13 points.

Alyson Colpitts (Fredericton) paced the Warriors in a losing effort, with eight points on six of 15 hitting, a block and an ace.

Sharp from the first serve on Friday, the Marauders had their visitors under constant pressure from the service line, and notched nine aces as a team as a result. Their crisp play had the Marauders well ahead at the technical timeout in set one, and saw them coast to the finish line while hitting .500.

McMaster cooled somewhat on the offensive side of the ball in the second set, but they continued to stymie Waterloo's own attempts to create points. The Warriors could only muster eight kills versus eight errors in the frame, as the Marauders took a commanding two-set lead with a 25-16 win.

McMaster continued to control the pace in the third set and would cruise to the finish line taking it 25-11.

Kristen Bartmann (Uxbridge) was strong defensively with nine digs in the contest while Colpitts had eight.

Waterloo will have the rest of the week off before another road contest on Sunday against Brock in St. Catharines.  The Warriors will then take to the PAC for their home opener on Friday, November 6 in a rematch against McMaster.
