Box Score 2 Despite only coming away with one point in two weekend games, the Waterloo men's soccer team showed resilience in games against top OUA competition over the weekend.
On Friday the Warriors tied the Western Mustangs, 2-2 on Warrior Field meaning Waterloo took 4 out of a possible 6 points off of the 'Stangs this year. Scoring for Waterloo was
Mohammad Amin Nafar (Jeddah) who blistered a shot home in the 6th minute.
Western took a 2-1 lead with goals just two minutes apart by Taso Bujouves and Jonathan Hodge but the Warriors found the equalizer late in the game on a penalty.
Yusuf Khaled (Burlington) stepped up to the box and made it look easy to tally the tying goal and the game would end in a 2-2 draw.
Hansel Paico-Avilez (Oakville) was busy for the Warriors in net making 7 saves on 9 shots on target.
On Saturday, Waterloo continued their hot play against a very strong team in the York Lions. York has only lost one game all season and Waterloo was close to handing them their second. For the second straight game, the Warriors opened the scoring as
Jae Jin Lee (Toronto) scored his team leading sixth goal in the 10th minute.
It looked as if the Warriors were going to head into the half up 1-0 but York found the tying goal in the 42nd minute off the foot of Michael Cox. The two combatants went back in forth in the opening 20 minutes of the second half before York went up for good in the 66th minute on a goal by Joey Cicchillo. The Warriors could not answer and the game would end 2-1 in favour of the Lions. Paico-Avilez was busy again, facing another 9 shots in the contest.
Waterloo is now 3-9-1 on the season and are currently on the outside looking into the playoff picture with 10 points. They will need to continue their strong play next weekend in a pair of games at Warrior Field against York (Friday) and Windsor (Sunday).
