Box Score The Warriors women's volleyball team opened 2015 against a formable opponent in the No. 4 ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues Friday evening at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Waterloo was in tough from the outset of this match and eventually lost 0-3 (14-25, 8-25, 9-25) against the now 10-0 Varsity Blues.
Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver) had the strongest match the Warriors, tallying 6 kills, 8 digs and 1 block in the contest.
Toronto got out to an early 4-1 advantage in the first set but the Warriors rallied and kept the game close. Two kills from the Blues' Sarah Chapin gave Toronto a 16-10 lead at the technical time out. U of T continued to roll with a 9-4 streak to close out the first set before winning 25-14.
The second set saw the Blues dominate from start to finish, leading 16-5 at the break. Waterloo struggled to run a sound offense were in tough on the defensive side of the ball against a quick Toronto attack. Toronto's Tessa Davis had a kill to end the frame 25-8 in favour of the home team which saw Waterloo trailing 2-0.
Some long rallies started the third but Toronto eventually got back in control of the set and led by a strong margin at the technical timeout. The black and gold would eventually fall in the set 25-9 and fall 3-0 to the nationally ranked Varsity Blues.
Supporting MacKenzie on the offence was
Natasha Spaling (Drayton) and Claire Clunas who combined for 5 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs on the evening.
Kristen Bartmann (Uxbridge) had 16 digs while
Emily Needles (Thorndale)s had 9 assists and 5 digs.
The Warriors will have Saturday off before heading to St. Catherine's on Sunday afternoon to take on the Brock Badgers in an afternoon affair.
