Men's Soccer vs. Guelph

Men's Soccer

Struggles continue for Warriors

The struggles continued for the men's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon in Guelph as the Gryphons handed Waterloo a 5-0 loss.  The victory moves the Gryphons to 6-1-1 on the season while the Warriors drop to 0-8-1.

The Gryphons applied pressure to the Warriors defence right from the get go. The early pressure paid off in the sixth minute when midfielder Ethan Danielli (Guelph, Ont.) potted his second goal of the year after a beautiful pass from Mike Bijman.

Coach Keith Mason substituted striker Jamie Wilcock (Aurora, Ont.) midway through the first half and that move paid off in a big way in the 42nd minute as Wilcock scored his first goal of the year.

The Gryphons defence led by Justin Springer  (Burlington, Ont.) had a particularly strong opening half, holding the Warriors to zero shots.

Guelph continued their strong play to start the second half, applying consistent pressure to the Warriors. The Gryphons dictated the play, maintaining possession in the Warriors end for the better part of the game. Michael Bijman (Brantford, Ont.)  had been all over the pitch throughout the match and was finally rewarded for his strong play in the 65th minute as he put home the Gryphon's third goal of the match off a rebound.

In the 74th minute Gryphon striker Robert Murphy (Ottawa) was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Murphy converted the penalty to make the score 4-0 Gryphons.

The Gryphons cemented the victory with their fifth goal of the match when second half substitute Jared Agyemang scored in the 82nd minute. The game ended in a dominating 5-0 victory for Guelph.
Waterloo returns to Warrior Field on Sunday to face the Windsor Lancers at 3:15pm.
