Box Score The Waterloo women's volleyball team moved one game above .500 with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 14-25, 25-23) win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons in their home opener on Saturday. The Warriors improve to 3-2 on the season and hand Guelph their second loss of the season in the process. The Gryphons boast the identical record of 3-2 as both teams sit in a tie for first overall in the OUA west.
The Warriors stormed out of the gate in the opening set, controlling play at the net. With Guelph struggling to put away their kills and tossing up several service errors Waterloo would easily cruise to the opening set victory 25-16.
The second set started off much the same with Waterloo being led by great outside hits by
Gillian Henderson (Ottawa/) and
Shannon Lodoen (Waterloo/) to jump out to an early lead. The Gryphons would however find their game and make it interesting in the late going of the set but the black and gold was able to hold on for the 25-21 lead to take a convincing 2-0 lead.
A new Guelph team arrived in the third set and jumped out to a 9-4 lead. The Gryphons kept the petal down and continued to control the set, getting themselves back in the match with a 25-14 set win.
Up 2-1, Waterloo looked determined to close out this contest in the fourth set. After leading the entire set Guelph found their first lead late in the set at 20-19 but a huge solo block by
Danielle Kamps (Vineland Station/) would even the score at 20's. Following two strong serves by
Mikaela Klie (/), the Warriors would take a 22-20 lead but the resilient Gryphons would get the next two points to even the score once again.
All even at 22, second year outside hitter Lodoen would give Waterloo another two point advantage with a pair of strong plays, first with the tip followed by a huge kill. Down 24-22, Guelph's Alicia Combe-Dingwall would get the service back for her team with one of her seven kills but a service error by Stephanie Vickers would hand Waterloo the set (25-23) and match.
Leading the Waterloo attack was Kamps who had 12 kills on only 21 attempts in the middle.
Natasha Spaling (Drayton/) also had a stellar game in the middle with 11 kills and a massive seven blocks. Lodoen and Henderson teamed up for 18 kills with Henderson having a strong defensive game with 17 digs. Klie finished the game with 42 assists in the win.
Madison DeDecker led all Gryphons with 11 kills in a losing effort.
The Warriors will have the rest of the week off before returning to action next Friday vs. Toronto at 8pm. The game can be seen live on Warriors TV.
