Box Score Game Summary

The Waterloo women's volleyball team put forth a determined effort against the defending OUA champions on Saturday night but fell short as the Queen's Gaels took the match 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19).

With the win the Gaels move into second place with a 5-2 record while Waterloo drops to tenth at 2-4.

The Gaels jumped out to an 8-3 first set lead before the Warriors could even blink but the black and gold would battle back to take a 20-16 lead.  The Gaels would tally the next five points to take a 21-20 lead forcing head coach Gaby Jobst to call a timeout.

The break would settle her troops down and they would even the game at 21-all on the next point.  It would be all for not as the Gaels scored the next four of five points to take the set 25-22.

The second set saw the Warriors come out of the gate firing, taking an early 6-1 lead.  From there the set would turn into a marathon as little separated the two combatants.  Waterloo would take a 19-15 lead before seeing it disappear with the Gaels countering with five straight points.

The visiting side would eventually take a 24-22 lead and looked destined to gain a 2-0 set lead but the resilient Warriors would notch the next four points to take the roller coaster set by a score of 26-24.

All square a 1-set a piece the third set would open at 8-8 before the Gaels would take advantage of several unforced errors by the black and gold.  With several big kills by Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary) and Katie Hagarty (Aurora) the Gaels would cruise to the easy 25-15 set win and take command of the match.

The fourth set again opened with the Warriors looking poised to even the match as Clara Tse (Hong Kong/) and Shannon Lodoen (Waterloo/) led their team with kills from the outside.  With the score tied at 18 apiece, the Gaels turned it up a notch and tallied the next eight of nine points to capture the set 25-19 and match 3-1.

Ogilvie led both teams in kills with 20 while Hagarty tallied 11 for her Gaels.  Waterloo native Anna Pedjase was solid all game long with 41 assists in the match.

For the Warriors, Tse and Lodoen both tallied 11 kills in the match while both adding 13 and 15 digs respectively.  Kristen Sheffield (North Bay/) chipped in with eight kills while Mikaela Klie (/) had 27 helpers in the loss.

Defensively Alice Li (Toronto/) was outstanding for the black and gold making highlight reel digs all night long.  Li finished the match with 19 digs.

The Warriors  prepare for their think pink home game against the Brock Badgers at 2pm next Saturday at the PAC.

Quotes by Gaby Jobst:

"I feel our team plays with a lot of energy and aggression defensively but we haven't yet found ways to consistently terminate at the net. And we make too many unforced errors on our side right now that hurt the bottom line. I have seen improvement in our play from weekend to weekend so at least we're moving in the right direction. The errors will hopefully decrease with confident repetition and frankly, I like the way we fight. Now we need to learn to finish."
