Game Summary
The Warriors four game winning streak was snapped on Thursday night as they lost an exciting 4-3 shootout game to the Western Mustangs on the road.
The shootout went 10 rounds long with Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.) potting the winner to improve the Mustangs record to 12-1-2 and reclaim first overall in the OUA west. Waterloo fell to 10-4-2 and sit comfortably in third place, six points ahead of fourth place Windsor who comes to town on Saturday.
The Mustangs got off to a good start as they took advantage of a four-minute high sticking penalty that was taken by Waterloo early on.
Shaun Furlong potted his second goal of the season at 1:56 with assists going to
Matt Ashman and
Kevin Baker.
Both teams brought a physical game as the period was filled with big hits and aggressive play.
Another early power play goal was scored to start the second period, this time by the Warriors.
Chris Ray (Kelowna/) beat Mustangs goalie
Josh Unice just 25 seconds into the frame, with assists to
Kirt Hill (Winnipeg/) and
Jarrett Schnurr (Waterloo/).
Waterloo was able to take the lead a little while later at 3:28. Hill from
Kealin Wong (Regina/) and Ray put the Warriors on top for the first time in the game. Hill's second point of the game extended his scoring race league with 28 points on the season while Ray is two back (third in the country) with 26 points.
The Mustangs tied things up at 6:10 when Furlong scored his second of the game with
Adam McKee earning the sole assist.
Seconds later it looked as if Western was going to regain the lead as the puck trickled along the goal line, however it never did cross, keeping the game knotted at two.
Moir then gave Waterloo the lead for the second time of the period as he beat Unice glove side on a break-a-way at 14:52 while shorthanded.
Furlong responded for his third goal of the game at 17:51 once again on the powerplay.
Keaton Turkiewicz and
Andrew Eastman assisted on the hat trick goal.
Both teams came out full force in the third period but neither were able to get the go ahead marker due to strong goaltending by both
Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) and Unice.
The Mustangs peppered Hartigan with nine shots in overtime but couldn't beat him.
The shootout was filled with excitement, as it would take ten attempts per side to decide a winner.
Yashar Farmanara was the hero as he beat Hartigan to give the Mustangs the win. Hartigan stopped 44 of 47 shots and added seven saves in the shootout but came up short in the loss while Unice allowed three goals on 31 shots and denied eight of 10 chances in the shootout to pick up his ninth win of the season.
The Warriors conclude their 2011 portion of the schedule on Saturday as the visiting Windsor Lancers pay a visit to the Columbia Icefield Arena. This is the second meeting between the teams with Waterloo earning a 5-2 win back in October. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm and the game can be seen live on the
Streaming Sports Network (SSN Canada).
