The Warrior men's rugby team came away with a thrilling 26-8 win over the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at the CIF fields in Waterloo. The Warriors were able to score two tries in the final five minutes to earn the all-important bonus point that moved them ahead of Brock for a fifth place finish in the OUA standings.
With the extra point earned Waterloo will face the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA quarter-finals on Wednesday, November 2 on the road. Brock who finished sixth overall will face the McMaster Marauders in the other OUA quarter-final.
With the win Waterloo finished the season with a 3-5-0 record with 16 points while Brock finished with the identical record but with one point less at 15.
The turning point of the match came with five minutes remaining as Brock was flirting with the Warriors end zone before an errant pass was picked off by
Zach Bogdon (Preston/) who flew down the field determined for a try. Bogdon would be caught by a speedy Brock defender before dishing off the ball to
Adam Fitzpatrick (Waterloo/) who had a clear lane for the try. With that the Warriors led 21-6 but still needed another try for the bonus point.
Waterloo would find that try in the final minute of the match as some well-constructed ball movement would set up a last second try as Fitzpatrick capped off the play for his second straight try and to give Waterloo their fourth try of the game and 26-8 victory.
Other Warriors scoring in the game were
Tyler Haladuick (Calgary/) and
Matteo Schwartzentruber each with a try while Bogdon was successful on three of four convert attempts. Scoring the lone try for the Badgers was Mackenzie Redgate (Lindsay, Ont.) while Hugh McDonell (Brantford, Ont.) added a penalty goal.
The Warriors hope to carry their momentum into this week's OUA quarter-finals on Wednesday as they face the Guelph Gryphons in Guelph.
