Warriors finish season with dissapointing results

Friday, October 21 @ McMaster
McMaster 3, Waterloo 1

The Waterloo men's soccer team fell to the no. 6 McMaster Marauders on Friday evening by a score of 3-1.

Just six minutes in, the Marauders were the first to get a goal in the match. Forward Paterson Farrell (Oakville, Ont.) scored a header off a corner kick to get things going.

Later in the first half, Waterloo would tie it up with a goal from Adam Craig (Toronto/Westside S.S) with a rebound off the post. This would be the only goal to beat McMaster goal keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo (Hamilton, Ont.).

At the beginning of the second half, the Marauders would score again, this time coming from sweeper Garret McConnville (Ottawa, Ont.) on a strike from inside the 18-yard box.

In the 63rd minute, Cavalluzzo would make a key save off a Waterloo free kick for the score to remain 3-1.

Ten minutes later, McMaster's Gersi Xhuti (Etobicoke, Ont.) would have a great opportunity to score after beating two Waterloo defenders. The forward would try to go short side on Warriors keeper Alberto Tinebra (Hamilton/) but would hit the post on the attempt.

Then, in the 74th minutes of the match, the Marauders would seal the deal with another goal. Rookie Ryan Garnett (Waterloo, Ont.) would kick a corner kick into the box and would connect with Daniel Niksic (Stoney Creek, Ont.) for the header goal.

Waterloo fell to 3-11-1 on the season and play their final match of the season on Sunday, October 23 at Guelph.if this should happen.

Sunday, October 23 @ Guelph
Guelph 3, Waterloo 1

The Waterloo Warriors concluded their disappointing 2011 season with a 3-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon.  Waterloo finished the season in second last place with a 3-12-1 record.

It was a slow start for both teams, and the first fifteen minutes saw little action and no shots on either net. The stale-mate was finally broken in the 17th minute when Alex Biafore (Brampton, ON) crossed a rebound shot into an empty Warrior net, and Jacob Stolle (Stittsville, ON) slid to follow and tap it in.

Waterloo nearly tied it up thirty minutes into the game, after an initial shot was blocked by Gryphon goal-keep Chad Paparoni (Burlington, ON), and Mike Azzopardi (Richmond Hill, ON) rebounded -  but shot just over the cross-bar.

Warrior forward Sohyb Basir (Waterloo/) (Waterloo, ON) was a force to be reckoned with throughout the match, with his speed and precision. He tied the score-board in the 59th minute for the Warriors, after sending in a low-shot from a cross that Paparoni couldn't catch.

Drew Gowan (Welland, ON) took the lead for the Gryphons 62 minutes into the game, with a second goal after he broke away from Warrior defense down the left wing and shot right past Waterloo's goal-keep.

Only minutes later Max Bair-Marshall (Ottawa, ON) ran the same attack down the left wing – clearly taking advantage of a Waterloo weakness, and secured Guelph's lead with a third goal in the 64th minute.  Bair-Marshall almost made it a fourth down the same left-wing attack but this time was cut off by Waterloo defense. The Gryphons ended the game and Waterloo's season with a 3-1 victory.
