Another sluggish first period proved to be the Warriors' downfall as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Western Mustangs on Saturday evening in Waterloo. Western started the game more energetic than the Warriors and held pressure for most of the first five minutes.
Following a Mustang penalty, the Warriors got the chance to regain momentum, but instead the Mustangs opened the scoring shorthanded as Kevin Baker snuck one between the legs of Warrior goalie Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener/) to take a 1-0 lead.
With three minutes remaining in the first period, the Warriors would equalize the game as Tyler Moir (Calgary, Alb.) picked up his second goal of the season as he put home the rebound off a shot from Kyle Schwende (Kitchener, Ont.) past Mustangs netminder Anthony Grieco.
The new found Warriors energy would be short lived as the Mustangs would notch two late first period goals as Jason Furlong scored with 45 seconds remaining putting a screened shot past Hartigan followed by Kyle Lamb roofing a shot with one second remaining on the clock to give Western a 3-1 lead heading into the second period.
Waterloo started the second with a lot more jump picking up their physical game and finishing their checks. Their hard work would be rewarded on the powerplay with some gritty work by forward Kirt Hill (Winnipeg, Man.) to slide the puck out to an open Steve Whitely (Petrolia, Ont.) who made no mistake on the one-time pulling the Warriors to within one. The Warriors finished the period outshooting the Mustangs 18-8 but only had one goal to show for.
The Warriors continued their physical dominance in the third period and evened the score at three as Tyler Moir (Calgary/) corralled a rebound in tight and put the puck past Grieco for his second of the game (third of the season). Two minutes following the equalizer by Moir, he would spoil his strong individual game by receiving a five minute checking from behind penalty.
The Mustangs would make no mistake on the man advantage as a Scott Aarssen point should would be tipped by Lamb in front, his second of the game and the eventual game winning goal. The Warriors were unable to solve Grieco and would lose their second straight game.
The Warriors now sit tied for fourth in the OUA west with a 3-3 record. The black and gold will get the chance to avenge their loss as they travel to London to face the Western Mustangs on Friday, October 29 and follow it up with a meeting with the Windsor Lancers in Windsor on Saturday.
