Edmonton, AB – The University of Regina Cougars captured the top prize at the 2010 CIS/CCA Women's Curling Championship with a thrilling triumph over the Saint Mary's University Huskies. Brooklyn Lemon, the Regina skip, displayed nerves of steel as she drew the button in an extra end giving her team a 6-5 victory.
The Regina rink, which also features Chelsey Peterson at third, Ashley Green at second, Nicole Lang at lead, Sarah Watamanuk as alternate, and Jackie Downer as coach, trailed 4-2 after seven ends, but came up with a huge steal of two points in the 9th end, setting the stage for the extra end dramatics. The Cougars will compete as Team Canada at the 2011 FISU World Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey.
It was an impressive performance by the Regina team throughout the entire Championships as they finished the round-robin with a 4-1 record, good enough for 2nd place in their pool, with their only defeat coming at the hands of those very same Huskies who they beat in Sunday's final.
It was another strong performance this year by the Saint Mary's team, who also finished as the runner-up at the 2009 Championships. The Huskies squad, which features 1st team All-Canadian Marie Christianson at skip, Christina Black at third, Katie Thomas at second, Julia Williams at lead, and Kyle Reynolds as coach, finished first in their pool with a 4-1 mark.
The semi-finals took place on Saturday afternoon with Regina taking out Wilfrid Laurier 11-5 in eight ends, while Saint Mary's defeated the University of Waterloo 8-5. Earlier in the day, Waterloo reached the semi-finals by beating the host University of Alberta, 9-6 in a tiebreaker. By virtue of reaching the semi-finals, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and the Waterloo Warriors earned the bronze medals.
