Job Summary:

The Recreational Sports Student Program Coordinator (SPC) will report to the Coordinator, Recreational Sports or their designate while Referee Mentors will report to the Assistant, Intramurals or their designate. These senior staff are split into these two groups. 

The Rec Sports SPC will be a vital component of the Intramural Program within Warrior Recreation at the University of Waterloo. With over 10,000 student participants each year, successful applicants will assist in providing an engaging and inclusive atmosphere for all participants. These student leaders will support other Intramural staff where needed and enhance the experience and customer service given to captains and their teams. They will also assist in the operation, assigning of shifts, and other tasks related to the golf simulator and Golf Simulator Attendants as well as a variety of sport club related tasks. This role is largely an administrative role. 

Referee Mentors will provide officials of all sports a resource to further develop and improve their skills as an official. The mentor will conduct both scheduled and unscheduled evaluations of officials to ensure consistency and quality of officiating as well as opportunities for growth among all officials. Both position will assist with any other general task that will benefit Warrior Recreation.

This is a casual, part-time, 4-month contract. Primary shift responsibility will be evenings with the option of some weekend work and some flexibility. 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Recreational Sports SPC

  • Updates schedules, scores, standings, stats and worked staff hours
  • Answer emails for both intramurals and golf simulator
  • Arrive prepared and on time to all scheduled shifts
  • Be present during Intramural Office Hours
  • Communicate with team captains and players
  • Ensure game iPads and/or scoresheets are available for staff
  • Engage with participants on a regular basis
  • Handle on site disputes involving player conflict
  • Assign golf simulator attendant shifts
  • Always maintain an appropriate professional demeanor
  • Act as an ambassador for Warrior Recreation

 

Referee Mentor

  • Assist with registration of the Intramural Program
  • Provide specific and individualized feedback to officials requesting an evaluation and/or a change in level.
  • Sporadically attend games unannounced to ensure rules and policies are being applied consistently by all officials and across all sport leagues
  • Complete evaluation reports submitted to both the official and Recreational Sports Coordinator
  • Always maintain an appropriate professional demeanor
  • Act as an ambassador for Warrior Recreation

Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Must be a Waterloo student (or graduated <1 year ago)
  • General knowledge of the Intramural Program
  • Knowledge of Sports (preferred)
    • Required for Referee Mentor
  • Standard First Aid with CPR (preferred)
  • Referee Mentor must be certified by an accredited sports body in at least one of the four major sports
    • Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball
