WATERLOO, Ont. - Baseball's Arthur Kowara (Etobicoke, ONT/Michael Power) and Football's Nick Orr (Caledon/Mayfield Secondary School) have been named the W Store Warriors Athletes of the Week, presented by Imprint.
Kowara was the biggest reason Waterloo was able to go 5-0 this week, including a 2-0 start to OUA regular season action.
In four games played, Kowara reached base on 11 of his 13 plate appearances, racking up seven hits, three home runs, two doubles, 11 RBIs, and 8 runs scored along the way. That accounts for a .778 batting average, .846 OBP, and a ludicrous 2.846 OPS.
Two of those home runs came in Friday's regular season doubleheader against McMaster. He hit a Grand Slam in the third inning of the first game, which ended in a 17-2 route, and then set the tone with a 2-run home run in the first inning of game two, which finished 7-0.
"Arthur - a perennial OUA MVP Candidate - was simply unstoppable this week. A team captain, Arty carried the offense to wins over Guelph, McMaster (twice), and York, as he drove in a remarkable 11 runs in 4 games played (and only 13 plate appearances)," said Warriors head coach Ben Norris.
"He'll look to keep the momentum rolling this week with games against Laurier, Western and Windsor."
Kowara and the Warriors play a home-and-home Battle of Waterloo exhibition series Tuesday and Wednesday before resuming regular season action with doubleheaders at Western on Saturday and at home against Windsor on Sunday.
Orr continued his strong start to the season, this time in a winning effort as Waterloo toppled Carleton 31-26 in Ottawa on Sunday.
Orr had a career-high 352 passing yards, completing 29 of 51 throws and scoring one touchdown through the air with no interceptions. He added 62 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He also found the endzone on a quarterback sneak that was scored as a fumble recovery, giving him three majors in the game.
Orr will lead the Warriors against the Queen's Gales in Kingston this Saturday.
This is the second Warriors Athlete of the Week award for Kowara, and second in as many weeks for Orr.
