Carter Kipp (Welland, ONT/Notre Dame College School) collected three hits in five at bats, as Waterloo Warriors defeated Guelph Gryphons 10-4 on Saturday in the OUA Wild Card Game. Kipp singled in the third inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled in the fifth inning.
Waterloo Warriors got on the board in the top of the third inning after Guelph Gryphons committed an error, Kipp singled to the left side of the infield,
Arthur Kowara (Etobicoke, ONT/Michael Power) singled to center field,
Adam Leatherland (Simcoe, ONT/Delhi District Secondary School) singled down the left field line, and Waterloo Warriors scored on a wild pitch, each scoring one run.
Luca Valvo (Niagara Falls, ONT/A.N Myer Secondary School) earned the win for Waterloo Warriors. The starter allowed three hits and four runs (one earned) over five and one-third innings, striking out three and walking three. Daniel Meron took the loss for Guelph Gryphons. The starting pitcher went two and two-thirds innings, surrendering five runs (zero earned) on five hits, striking out four and walking none.
Owen Newman (Mississauga, ONT/Streetsville Secondary School) and
Carson Hepburn (Newmarket, ONT/Bill Crothers Secondary School) each came on in relief for Waterloo Warriors and shutdown Guelph Gryphons.
Waterloo Warriors tallied 11 hits in the game. Kowara drove the middle of the lineup, leading Waterloo Warriors with four runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on the day.
Jai Pawa (Vancouver, ONT/Southridge) and
Sam Shephard (Belle River, ONT/St. Anne Catholic High School) each collected multiple hits for Waterloo Warriors. Waterloo Warriors turned two double plays in the game.
Brendan Cooper provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Guelph Gryphons with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-4 on the day. Nolan Scicluna, Marco Da Gama, and Cooper each collected one hit for Guelph Gryphons.
With the win, the Warriors clinch their spot in the
OUA Championship next weekend, October 9-11, in Welland, Ont.
