WATERLOO, Ont. - After a historic weekend in Thunder Bay, Women's Basketball's Ghiselle Poblete (Brampton, ONT/St. Roch Catholic Secondary School) and Men's Basketball's Isaiah McRae have been named the W Store Warriors Athletes of the Week, presented by Imprint.
Poblete had a fantastic all-around performance in a 57-55 win over Lakehead. She co-led the team with 14 points and led the team with five assists, including one on Bree Drost's (Petersburg, ONT/Woodland Christian High School) game-sealing bucket late in the fourth quarter.
She also had six of the team's 20 steals, tying her career high, which ranks third all-time in program history (Olivia Tomlin's (Kitchener, ONT/Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute) seven steals on Saturday tied the program record).
"Ghiselle was a presence on both ends of the floor tonight," said Warriors Head Coach Jessica Roque. "She found her teammates as well as herself and played really unselfishly."
McRae led the Warriors across all 26 varsity sports with four Warriors Athlete of the Week selections last season, and picked up right where he left off in the season opener.
He was an offensive force in the men's team's 79-75 defeat of the Thunderwolves. He had a career-high 37 points on 12-18 shooting, including 5-8 from three-point range. With the Warriors trailing by 11 with four minutes remaining, McRae took over, scoring 11 of his team's 21 points to complete the comeback.
Warriors Head Coach Troy Stevenson called it "one of the best performances on the road in Waterloo history." McRae's 37 points ranks 12th all-time among Warriors single-game performances on the road or at home.
Saturday marked the first win in Thunder Bay in nine years for the Warriors men's team, and the first time since November 2003 that both the women's and men's teams beat the Thunderwolves on the road.
The Warriors are back on the road this weekend with games at Western and Windsor before welcoming the Carleton Ravens for their home opener on Friday, November 6 at 6:00 and 8:00 PM.
