Poblete, Onuska named W Store Warriors Athletes of the Week, presented by Imprint

WATERLOO, Ont. - Women's Basketball's  Ghiselle Poblete (Brampton, Ont./)  and Men's Hockey's Mathias Onuska (Waterloo, Ont./Ressurection) have been named the W Store Warriors Athletes of the Week, presented by Imprint.

With 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, Poblete played a significant role in the Warriors' 68-64 win over Laurier. Her team's top point getter on the night and averaging 12.9 points per game on the season, Poblete was a difference maker. She shot 6-13 from the field and 2-4 from deep, helping her team get back to a .500 record at 8-8.

"Ghiselle led the charge for the Warriors to capture a crucial divisional win as well as helping to secure the lead for Battle of Waterloo" said Women's Basketball Head Coach Jess Roque.

The Warriors are now one win away from winning the Battle of Waterloo thanks to Ghiselle and her efforts. The Warriors also hold down a playoff spot in the OUA with three weeks left to play. Poblete picks up the basketball again in Windsor, January 30 against the Lancers at 6:00 PM.

This is Poblete's first-ever Warriors Athlete of the Week award.

Matt Onuska (Waterloo, ON/) started both games against Western and Toronto, posting a strong weekend performance. He allowed just three goals across two games (1.50 GAA) and turned aside 70 of 73 shots for an impressive .956 save percentage, consistently giving his team a chance to win. And win they did, defeating the Mustangs 5-2 and the Varsity Blues 2-1 to bank four crucial points as we enter the final stretch of the regular season.

"Matt made a number of outstanding saves and created confidence in our team" said Men's Hockey Head Coach Brian Bourque.

It's been a fantastic week for Onuska who was selected by USPORTS as a Top 8 Academic All-Canadians for his demonstrated excellence in the classroom and in competition in the 2024-2025 season, and will be recognized for this achievement this week in Ottawa.

The Warriors now sit just four points back of a playoff spot with six games remaining on the schedule.

This is Onuska's second Warriors Athlete of the Week Award, and first of the season.

The Warriors face off against the TMU Bold, Friday, January 30 at 7:00 PM on home ice. Then again, Saturday, January 31 at 4:00 PM against Guelph.
