Waterloo Equestrian Club Competes at OCEA Finals with Top Three Finish

The University of Waterloo Equestrian Club highlighted their talent at the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Assocation (OCEA) Finals, held on March 1-2, 2025. Competing against top university teams from across the province, Waterloo riders demonstrated skill and determination throughout the event. Notably, Lea Gurowka secured an impressive third-place finish in the highly competitive Open Division over fences, placing among the top riders in a class of twenty-eight. As the team reflects on their performance, they are eager to enhance their organization and training routines to strengthen their presence in future competitions.

The Equestrian Team is a club that allows experienced riders to represent the university in the OCEA. Members compete in hunter equitation classes on unfamiliar horses, assessing their adaptability and riding skills. To join, riders must have prior experience riding and participate in tryouts. Once on the team, riders attend regular workouts and take riding lessons, either at Findaway Equestrian or with their own coach. Beyond competition, the club fosters a strong community by organizing social events such as riding clinics, team bonding activities, and trips to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The team is led by a dedicated executive group that manages operations, events, sponsorships, and fundraising. The Waterloo Equestrian Team provides a supportive and competitive environment for students looking to develop their riding skills, compete at the university level, and connect with others who share a passion for equestrian sports. Tryouts are held in early September, and interested riders are encouraged to reach out in August for more information.

Waterloo riders demonstrated a strong presence at the finals, with team members Lauren Marcella, Callista Carroll, Hannah Gawel, Gabriella Kim, Ayat Hasan, and Lea Gurowka representing the university. A standout performance came from Lea Gurowka, who secured third place in the Open Division over fences out of twenty-eight riders. As the team looks ahead, they plan to refine their organization and training strategies to further strengthen their competitive edge in future seasons.
