Warriors and Lakers Split Weekend Series 1-1

After a hard fought 2-1 victory on Friday night, the Waterloo Warriors returned to the ice on Saturday for a highly anticipated rematch against the Nipissing Lakers. With both teams coming off an intense battle, the stage was set for another exciting showdown.

Waterloo wasted no time getting on the board, as Jaden Goldie (Owen Sound, ON) found the back of the net in the opening minute, assisted by Tate Popple (Brandon, MB). The Warriors quickly doubled their lead moments later when Jaxson Murray (Waterloo, ON) capitalized on a setup from Cole Fraser (Quispamsis, NB) and Jordan Hendry (Surrey, BC). Despite the early deficit, the Lakers responded with resilience, netting two goals before the period ended to even the score at 2-2.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the second frame, but the scoring continued. Nipissing struck first, taking their first lead of the game. However, the Warriors answered back in style, as Jaxson Murray (Waterloo, ON) tallied his second goal of the night to knot things up at 3-3 heading into the final period.

The third period saw both teams lock down defensively, with neither side able to break through. Strong goal tending and disciplined play kept the score tied, sending the game into overtime.

In the period of play, Nipissing secured the game deciding goal, snatching a 4-3 victory and splitting the weekend series at one win apiece.

The Warriors now turn their focus to their next challenge, as they take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on February 7.
