With a full crowd cheering them on, both teams delivered a strong performance, showcasing solid defense and timely plays. The game was tightly matched throughout and ended with an intense overtime finish.
Both teams opened with high intensity, trading penalties early on. Expert penalty killing efforts on both sides kept the game scoreless for much of the first period. However, Ottawa managed to break through the Warriors' defense late in the frame, scoring to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Shots were evenly matched, with Ottawa narrowly leading 13-12.
The Warriors came out strong in the second, quickly shifting the momentum. They capitalized on offensive opportunities, scoring twice early in the period. Emmet Pierce (Napanee, ON) netted the first goal, assisted by Liam Fedak (Oakville, ON) and Kieran Ruscheinski (Calgary, AB). Moments later, Liam Fedak (Oakville, ON) found the back of the net, with assists from Emmet Pierce (Napanee, ON) and Cole Fraser (Quispamsis, NB). Despite Ottawa's relentless pressure and a 20-15 shot advantage in the period, Waterloo held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period of play.
The Warriors fought hard to maintain their lead in the third. With just over three minutes remaining, the Gee-Gees managed to tie the game, sending the contest into overtime after a closely contested period.
In the extra frame, Ottawa capitalized on an opportunity to secure the win. After a hard-fought battle through regulation, a decisive play allowed the Gee-Gees to break the deadlock, ending the game 3-2 in their favor.
