Box Score The Waterloo Warriors were able to keep within striking distance through halftime of their week three OUA football matchup with the nationally-ranked Windsor Lancers. But unfortunately for the hosts, Windsor's speed on both sides of the ball became too much for the Warriors to weather.
The Lancers recorded six sacks, and quarterback Danny Skelton threw for 391 yards as Windsor spoiled Black and Gold day with a 37-0 victory over Waterloo on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. The win elevates Windsor to 3-0 on the season, while the Warriors fall back below .500 with a 1-2 record. Â Â Â
The game was billed as a battle of the top two rushing attacks in the nation, but it was Windsor's short- to mid-distance passing game that wore down Waterloo. Skelton set a career-high in passing yards, while the Waterloo offense was limited to just 126 yards rushing and 154 yards of total offense.
Tyson Hergott (Waterloo, ON/) was once again a force for the Warriors offense, as he continued to make his case as one of the most dominant pass rushers in the country. For the third straight game, Hergott forced a strip-sack fumble, to go along with 6.5 total tackles and a batted pass at the line of scrimmage.
Anesu Latmore (Ottawa, ON/) nabbed an interception in the end zone to snuff out a Windsor drive, while
Diego Arenas (Montreal/) finished with a game-high 8 tackles.
It was a see-saw affair for much of the first quarter, as the Lancers took an early 3-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal from Brady Lidster. Windsor extended the lead with a 3-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a 39-yard run by Joey Zorn to make it 10-0 for the visitors. On the next possession, Kolade Amusan registered his first of two sacks on Waterloo QB
Nick Orr (Caledon, ON/), setting up a conceded safety and making the score 12-0 Windsor.
The teams exchanged big play blows late in the first, as Windsor punter James Parker ran for 26 yards and a first down on a third-and-ten fake punt call near midfield. But just three plays later, Hergott beat his tackle cleanly and wrapped up Skelton in the backfield, forcing the ball out.
Justin Gec (Waterloo, ON/) recovered for the black and gold, and the Warriors kept the deficit at an even dozen after 15 minutes.
Lidster added a field goal on Windsor's first possession of the second quarter to make it 15-0, but defense and turnovers were the name of the game for the remainder of the half. The Warriors finally found themselves knocking on the doorstep, but Orr lost the ball on a big hit after scrambling for a first down deep in Windsor territory. The Warriors answered with a big play of their own though, when Latmore picked off a Skelton pass in the end zone, keeping the score 15-0 at the half.
After another Lidster field goal made it 18-0, the Lancers dealt the Warriors a decisive blow late in the third on back-to-back bog plays – first, it was a completion from Skelton to Shane Johnson for 35 yards, followed immediately by a seam route reception by Ben McJannet, who took it 61 yards to the house. In just two plays, the Lancers had gone 96 yards and blown the game open.
With the game decided late in the fourth quarter, the Lancers got one more big play when Javonni Cunningham corralled a punt at midfield and returned it 52 yards for the touchdown.
The Warriors will now look to put the loss behind them and climb back to .500 when they cross University Avenue for the battle of Waterloo next Saturday, September 16. Kickoff from Knight-Newbrough Field is slated for 1pm.
