WATERLOO, Ont. - A chilly Saturday in Waterloo set the backdrop for the 2026 U SPORTS East-West Bowl.
With the University of Waterloo hosting the event for the third successive year, the nation's best 107 eligible prospects for the 2027 CFL Draft took to Warrior Field, as a sign that regular season action is not far around the corner.
After Team West took their second consecutive East-West victory a year ago, with a 32-20-win, the East looked to take victory for the first time since their 37-0 thumping of the West back in 2023.
In the end, it was team West making it a three-peat with a dramatic 28-27 victory capped off by a block on Team East's game-winning field goal attempt.
At kickoff, the bleachers were packed. With Team East kicking off, the West exploded out of the gate. Guelph Gryphons quarterback Tristan Aboud sent a flyer down the right side of the field and hit Laurier Golden Hawks wide receiver Ryan Hughes wide open and in stride. The West found themselves on the opposing seven-yard line off their first snap.
With the defense bearing down, the East made a critical early stop and gained possession but conceded a safety to put the West on the board for the first points of the game. 2-0.
Regaining possession, Aboud went back to work, this time on his feet. Spotting an opening, he split down the middle for a fantastic early first down.
Aboud went back to Clarke on the following play, and he dashed right for the goal line, with the ball being ruled down on the one-yard line.
After a timeout from the West, they quickly broke the plain to make it an 8-0 game, with Queen's Gaels kicker Matthew Driver converting the extra point, for a 9-0 score. The West carried the momentum both on the field, and throughout the stands early on.
With under two minutes to go in the quarter, Saint Mary's receiver Chandler Zinck-Marie brought the East fans out of their seats with a 34-yard punt return.
In the final minute, the East attacked strongly. Carleton Ravens quarterback Elijah Barnes delivered a beautiful pass to the corner, and hit Golden Hawks receiver Jaxon Stebbings for a 45-yard completion. The East was on the one-yard line themselves, looking to get on the board in the quarter – which they did. Barnes handed the ball off to Ottawa Gee-Gees running back Sofulemayne Camara for a four-yard rush to the house. The extra point was up and good from Laval kicker Felipe Forteza, and it was a 10-7 lead for the West after the first quarter.
As the West got the ball back to start the second, in came Windsor Lancers QB Nick Dimovski. Converting a couple of first downs quickly, the East defensive line held their ground at midfield, forcing the West to punt away. The ball was not moved past the half by the East on the following possession either. It was clear that that both squads prioritized tight coverage to start the quarter – quite the change of pace from a first quarter, where the offence was more free and wide open.
With the ball on the East's 41-yard line, Gryphon Marshall McCray went to work. Uncovered, McCray caught a short pass from his Guelph teammate Aboud, and broke away from two defenders, before taking it to the house off a 41-yard reception. The West took a 17-8 lead, courtesy of the phenomenal reception from McCray, and an extra point from Saint Mary's Huskies kicker Adam Johnson. The West's defense came up clutch to force a rouge after the extra point as well, to make it an 18-8 game.
Late in the quarter, the East looked to regain some momentum, just as they had to end the first. With the ball on the West's 27 yard-line, Barnes made the run of the half from the pocket. Dropping back, he found his lane down the right side, breaking away from Regina DB Max Polischuk, and took it all the way for a 27-yard touchdown. The East's quarterback had them right back in it. The extra point conversion made it a three-point game, which would be carried into the half. 18-15 for the West.
In the first half, Barnes threw 11 passes and completed 14, while Aboud had completed nine of his 13. The statistical standout for the West in the first half was Hughes, picking up 80 receiving yards. Stebbings led the way for the East with 45 receiving yards.
Early in the third quarter, the East forced a critical turnover on downs. With the ball in the hands of Calgary running back Mathieu Clarke's, Laval linebacker Etienne Delisle made a huge tackle to regain possession within ten yards of the endzone. They converted immediately, with Montreal running back Lucas Dembele-Bertet catching a pass from Alberta quarterback Trey Reider, and scoring. The East climbed out front for the first time in the game, and added two more points off an extra point conversion, and a rouge. 23-18.
Right after conceding the score at one end, the West were back at it down the field. With the ball on the East's 19 yard-line, Dimovski, with pressure from the left, broke to the right, and hit Saskatchewan receiver Daniel Kubongo at the back of the end zone. Just like that, the West were back in front, 25-23.
After the score, the West continued their strong all-around performance on defence. While Barnes moved efficiently in the pocket, the East turned the ball over on downs again, and it was back to Aboud and his offence.
In the final minute of the quarter, Aboud hit Kubongo once again, and his 21-yard carry brought the West to midfield. Another exceptional reception by Kubongo gave the West another first down. Aboud had yet again looked for Kubongo on the last play of the third, but the East defence had denied it. The connection between West quarterback and receiver defined a quarter in which the side wearing black made it certain they were not going to waiver.
As the fourth quarter began, Barnes quickly found Concordia receiver Oriola Poirier for a brilliant reception and a first down. Barnes continued his strong drive, by taking off for the sidelines on second-down, and making it to the 18-yard line. On third-down, the field goal team took to the field, and put the East back on top, 26-25. The faithful at Warrior Field were being treated to a nailbiter, and it was far from over.
After the field-goal, the East forced a quick two-and-out from the West, and got the ball back with just over 10 minutes to go. With Reider taking back to the field at quarterback, he found STFX receiver Payton Plesh on the sideline for a quick first-down. With the ball on the 23, Reider tossed a beauty to Stebbings at the left corner of the end zone, and while drawing a pass-interference call, brought the East to the eight.
Reider, attacking off the next snap, looked for a man on the right, but Saskatchewan's Ethan Laing came up with a massive interception in the endzone. The pick gave the West the ball back, down by one. It was a whole new game. One that the crowd were into the entire way.
The West was then rewarded on the scoreboard for their defensive masterclass. Johnson hit his mark from 22 yards out on a field goal kick, that put the West back in front.
The East then got another opportunity. Martel-Joseph brought the crowd out of their seats with a 62-yard punt return, to bring the East past midfield. Barnes then quickly delivered with another first down, finding Cedric Smith for a 17-yard reception.
The whole game seemed to be one where the heroics on both sides of the ball from one side, mirrored that of the other – fitting for the setting these national superstars are within.
With the East on second down with nine-seconds left, they opted to kick for the win from 17 yards. Then, the unthinkable occurred. Getting a touch on the ball, Windsor defensive lineman Ahmad Taylor blocked the kick to secure the victory for the West in a thrilling ending to one of the most exciting East-West Bowl games in recent memory. 28-27 was the final from Warrior Field.
As the first-ever recipients of the new East-West Bowl Trophy, the West were led by both the Offensive Player of the Game, quarterback Tristian Aboud of Guelph, and Defensive Player of the Game, Ethan Laing of Saskatchewan.
Throwing for 280 yards and a touchdown, Aboud spoke highly of the atmosphere throughout the game, and the reception of the Warriors staff throughout the week.
"It was an unbelievable experience just getting to play with all these guys from different conferences. I'm just so grateful that we were able to get the win today. That was huge" Aboud mentioned.
"I would like to thank the entire Waterloo staff and everyone at the University, because it was unbelievable. They hosted us so well, and the staff were all so willing to help us" he added.
Lifting the trophy, the crowd rose to acclaim the West, the champions of the East-West Bowl for the third year in a row.
