Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors show great fight battling two of the nations best

The Waterloo Warriors Men's basketball team showed their toughness and relentless effort this weekend taking on two of the nation's top ranked teams in the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gee's. Both games came down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter but unfortunately the Warriors were unable to pull the upsets at home to open up their 2023 campaign.

On Friday night the Warriors host the nations number one ranked team in the Carleton Ravens. The black and gold came out with a high level of grit and tenacity, forcing the Ravens to turn the ball over five times in the opening frame. The Warriors got great offensive contributions from Kuel Thomas (Kitchener, ON/Huron Heights Secondary) and Cristian Craciun (Ancaster, ON/) to pull the team within one after the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Warriors pick it up offensively connecting on four three-point field goals in the frame. Jackson Kelly (Brampton, ON) was a great spark off the bench and with their continued emphasis on matching the physicality of the Ravens, the Warriors took a 37-35 lead into halftime.

The Carleton Ravens proved why they are a top ranked team in the third quarter as they came out firing on both ends. A balanced attack scoring wise kept the Warriors within striking distance for most of the quarter but heading into the fourth the black and gold trailed by six. Veteran leader Kuel Thomas (Kitchener, ON/Huron Heights Secondary) brough fantastic energy and scoring for the Warriors in the final quarter, helping the team get within two with just under four minutes to go, however, the Ravens would hold off a late Waterloo push and hold to take it by a final of 81-70. The Warriors were led offensively by Thomas and Craciun with 18 and 14 respectively while Stefan Djukic (Kitchener, ON/) added thirteen as well.

On the second night of the back-to-back the Warriors hosted another talented squad in the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The black and gold picked up where they left off defensively from the night previous in this one, holding the top ranked Gee-Gees to just ten points in quarter number one as the Warriors led 15-10. In the second frame the team kept up with the defensive pressure while converting on the offensive end. Cristian Craciun (Ancaster, ON/) had an outstanding second quarter leading the Warriors with nine points, helping the team take a 33-27 lead at the half.

Unfortunately for the black and gold, a tough third quarter helped the Gee-Gees get back into the game and ultimately take a seven-point lead going into the final quarter. Powered by Thomas and Craciun, the Warriors made a final push getting the Ottawa lead down to as little as three, however that would be as close as they would get as the Ottawa Gee-Gees would take this one 66-54 the final. Craciun led the Warriors with nineteen points while Thomas and Kelly added 9 a piece.

The Warriors will head on the road for the first time in 2023 this upcoming weekend as they travel to London, Ontario to take on the Western Mustangs Friday January 13 before heading to Windsor the following night to take on the Windsor Lancers. You can watch the action live on OUA.tv.
