Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors drop home and home series with Gryphons

The Warriors men's basketball team dropped both games in their season series with the Guelph Gryphons this past weekend. The Warriors fell at home on Friday evening before losing a nailbiter on Saturday in Guelph.

In the opening game of the series the Warriors got off to a slow start in the first half and the Gryphons wasted no time jumping out to a big lead. Even with some better offensive output in the second half, the Gryphons proved to be too much for the black and gold on this night as they routed the Warriors in the first game of the back to back. Cristian Craciun (Ancaster, ON/) lead the Warriors in scoring with 18 points while Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate) and Raf Llorin (Cambridge, ON/) added 12 and 11 respectively.

The Warriors travelled to Guelph for the second game of the back-to-back and came out with much more energy and competitive fight to start the game. A back and forth first quarter saw the Warriors make a number of great plays at both ends of the floor, but they would trail 18-14 after the opening frame. The team would continue to crank up the defensive intensity in the second, holding Guelph to just 12 points in the quarter which allowed the Warriors to grab a 33-30 lead going into half-time. Guelph would not go away however, as the Gryphons won the third quarter 16-12 and took a slim one point lead into the fourth quarter. The Warriors battled back and forth for the entirety of the final frame, however, a last second shot from in close rolled just off the rim and Guelph held on to take the season series sweep, 64-63 the final.

The Warriors got an excellent boost off of the bench from a couple of first year players in Andrew Cook (Sarnia, ON/) and David Colterman (Burlington, ON) in this contest. Cook played excellent in the backcourt for the black and gold, chipping in 5 points to go along with 5 assists while Colterman added 7 points to go along with 4 rebounds. Cristian Craciun (Ancaster, ON/) once again led the Warriors in scoring with 15 points while Kanayo Nnadi (Kitchener, ON/Eastwood Collegiate) added 13.

The Warriors will look to defend their home court this weekend as the Algoma Thunderbirds come to town for a double header with game one tipping off Friday at 8:00pm at the PAC and game two Saturday at 6:00pm.
